Customer Reviews of Davy Jones' Locker
One of the best but not the best... I just wanted to correct an error from the previous review. The song "Been Down A Lot Lately" is not an Oed Ronne song. It was written and sung by Rob Minnig, the drummer, who I hope will grace us with more of his songs in the future. And by the way, the background vocals on that song sound an awful lot like Davy Jones of the Monkees. Hmm...
Also being a long time TOB fan myself, I must say that I am impressed with the cd, but I don't consider it their best. My fave is still "Beneath the Rhythm and Sound." However, I would highly recommend the cd not just for TOB fans but for anybody.
With their wonderful music and intelligent lyrics, I wish TOB would get the recognition and airplay they so deserve. If you want to listen to good quality music rather than the trash that is out there now, PLEASE listen to The Ocean Blue. You won't be disappointed.
Classic Ocean Blue Sound, Great Songs
This is a very good Ocean Blue album. Sonically, it is a return to the classic sound of the the first two albums, though I still miss the keyboards and sax of Steve. David Shelzel's song writing is great. The best tracks are the first three "Ayn" "Garden Song" and "Denmark", but I enjoy all of his songs on the album. The only real problem with this album is that 3 weaker songs, 2 by Oed, and 1 by Rob, are stuck right in the middle. As on the previous album "See The Ocean Blue", Oed's songwriting and singing ability strike me as amaturish. I can't help but wish he wasn't in the band (why replace a keyboardist with a guitarist?) Rob's song "Been Down A Lot Lately" is actually pretty cool, though it doesn't sound at all like The Ocean Blue. I would have preferred it placed at the end as a hidden or bonus track. I also highly recommend the three other Shelzel tracks found on the "Denmark" and "Ayn" ep's, and they would have been great inclusions on this album instead of Oed's tracks. This album has really grown on me since I bought it last spring. I would rank it as their third best, behind the sublime "Beneath the Rhythm and Sound" and "Cerulean".
Ocean Blue does it again.
David Schelzel is one of the most underrated songwriters of our time. The Ocean Blue, on this CD, shows that it is one of the most underrated bands of our time. It starts off with "Ayn" a song about a guy who can't get a girl out of his mind. "Garden Song" compares a garden to love. The best song on the CD, "Denmark" talks of meeting a lover and then leaving her. The singer wonders whether or not this is the right thing to do. "Cake" has a very haunting chorus of "Don't batter your own when you bake your cake." The effect is somewhat similar to Buddhist monks chanting, but not quite the same. "Bottle Yours" reminds you to think about good things when life gets you down. About the only complaint I could make about this CD is the song "My Best Friend" in which Schelzel gets a little whiny. Otherwise, it's a top-notch effort.
