Customer Reviews of David Moritz Michael The Water Journey
A Delightful Diversion For A Spring or Summer Day Composer David Moritz Michael(1751-1827) is to say the least not a very well known name among lovers of classical music. Born in Germany he became a member of the Moravian Church and in 1795 came to America to become part of the musical life of the Moravian communities of Nazareth and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He reorganized the Bethlehem Collegium Musicum and may have given the American premiere of Haydn's "The Creation".
Among his many works are several for wind ensembles or harmoniemusik as it was called in German speaking Europe. "Die Wasserfahrt" (The Water Journey) was composed to be played on boating trips not on any of Europe's grand waterways but on Pennsylvania's Lehigh River. Scored for two each of clarinets, bassoons, horns and one contrabass this is basically a divertimento meant to entertain and relax the listener and as such succedes quite nicely. No great issues or titanic upheavals here but merely a simple delight to while away day. The perfect background for a quiet spring or summer day which is basically just what the composer intended. Very fine performance by players who are obviously enjoying themselves.
