Customer Reviews of Das Boot - The Director's Cut
Wonderful movie, damaged my needless graphic moments This is a wonderful, suspenseful movie. I have not seen the original U.S. release of 140+ minutes or the 6-hour German mini-series, so I have nothing to compare it to. But as a stand-alone movie, it is excellent. The acting and special effects are superb. One can never tell those effects which were made with scale models. <

>The DVD is also a pleasure. The anamorphic transfer is beautiful, and the sound (I viewed it in English) is also superb. <

>My only complaint about the film...especially for an early-80's release....are the inclusion of some items which only appear to serve to please those who can't stand a movie without some bathroom humor somewhere along the way. Were the "puke in the bathroom", "crabs", and "peeing in a can" scenes really necessary? They took away greatly from an otherwise pleasureable movie, and contributed nothing. <

>Sadly, this type of thing is even MORE prevalent in today's movies. Is it any wonder I usually stick to pre-1980 movies?
Excellent
If this isn't a great move, it is certainly the greatest submarine movie ever made. For three and a half hours (which goes by quickly), we get to feel the claustrophobia of being on a submarine in this hyper-realistic film that is extremely well made. You need to approach this very long film as if it was a huge novel. it may be long but there isn't a wasted minute. I enjoyed this very much.
The only submarine movie you need to see...

> I'm sure you've read a ton of reviews about how great this movie is, so I won't bore you with another one. What I will say, in difference to what others have written, is that the English dubbing is fine. No dubbing is ever superior to the original dialogue, but they do a pretty good job here overall. Supposedly the original cast did their own voice work in English as well as German when making this film. (Don't know if that's true. As this was actually a German mini-series made for television.) Anyway, if you don't know sub titles, you can certainly enjoy this great epic of a motion picture with the English dubbing. After you finish it, and realize how amazing a film it is, you'll certainly come back and watch it again, and maybe then you'll see the original translation (Which differs greatly from the spoken one.) and enjoy the movie all over again.

>One of the best movies ever about WWII. If you like this, be sure to check out Stalingrad.
