Set in Europe's mythological past, Camelot incorporates Arthurian legends, Norse mythology, and Irish Celtic lore. Players choose which realm to serve during character creation: noble Albion, brutal Midgard, or mystical Hibernia. Each realm has unique character races and classes, such as elves, trolls, and highlanders. Once chosen, the player's character will serve that realm forever. Once the character has gained in power, he or she will be asked to defend the realm from invasion and to go on raiding parties into other realms.
If you're thinking that Camelot is designed to encourage player-vs.-player combat, you're right. Realms will battle over territory, key structures (such as towers and castles), and relics. Certain powers and noble titles can only be gained by successfully attacking or defending against rival realms. But Camelot also requires teamwork. All player-vs.-player combat is team based; you can only fight characters in opposing realms. Members of a realm must band together to fend off and attack other realms. In fact, each character class has been designed with player-vs.-player combat in mind, and each will offer a different ability or perform a specific task in player-vs.-player situations.
The inter-realm war is not merely chaotic, mass melee combat. There are towers to be taken over and defended, relics to pilfer from enemy realms, and territory to scout and conquer. Siege warfare will be required to take over castles, stealthy rogues will be able to climb into strongholds and open the gates, and much, much more will be available.
Player levels will be based on experience versus monsters, not versus other players. And while players can only gain certain powers by actively going out on raids or protecting their realms' relics from enemy invasions, it is entirely possible to have a successful and enjoyable experience in Camelot as a merchant, trader, or monster hunter. At higher levels, players will have to adventure out into regions between the realms, which could bring them into conflict with enemies--but not necessarily so.
In order to allow new players time to grow familiar with the game, each realm will have its own unique, protected adventuring areas designed for new players. These areas will be consistent within each realm, and will allow new players an opportunity to gain experience and power without worrying about an invasion from across the seas.
Of course, at higher levels, you could be asked to rally to Arthur's banner before the gates of Camelot itself, or to conduct a druid ceremony in the mists of Hibernia, all for the greater glory of the realm. --Mike Fehlauer

Customer Reviews of Dark Age of Camelot
Fun to a point. When I first bought the game, it was the first MMORPG I had ever played. It consumed my life, but at the time it didn't matter. The graphics are awesome (though your computer will slow down during RvR when Clerics and Healers are casting buffs on the fighers) and the land is huge, though where you can go is VERY dependent on your level. Wander too far and you'll be killed. The game is focused on levelling, perhaps too focused, though this is to be expected of a game where the main idea is Realm vs Realm and Person vs Person. I stopped playing because the game's programmers feel that the way to solve a class problem is to nerf [degrade] the class, undermining your levelling efforts. Bad news for those who like the game. There are also many Realm-oriented problems: Hibernia is mainly magic, and members of Hibby are prone to getting slaughtered by the likes of Midgard's trolls and pure tanks/fighters. I have recently decided to start playing again once I heard of the expansion coming out and the new races and classes, as well as the much-awaited Spellcrafting and Alchemy Tradeskills. So if you can deal with sacrificing your social life for a game that demands your constant attention, then Dark Age of Camelot is for you.
Are U Kidding- this game is AWESOME!
My God!- DAoC is by far the best RPG of any sort out there. If you liked EQ-look out, this game tramples it! There are tons of features spells monsters and styles of gameplay.
First, the gameplay is spectacular. It's easy to play, but complicated enough so that it doesn't get boring. Overall it is very smooth, and the graphics are great. I liked EQ, but immediately quit my account when I saw this game. Spells look much cooler that in EQ, and battles are fun and there are lots of skills you can use during them.
You can play many different ways. You can fight monsters, gaining experience and money, advancing higher and higher through the levels. Or you can become a pvp rvr player. Here, you group up with your guilds and realm and try to conquer the land in other realms and defend yours. Most of the time there are many people better than you on the battlefield, but it still great fun and you get into it. You can also go on many quests, given by NPC's or players. They are great fun and have good rewards. Also, almost every NPC has a task to give you if you ask, kinda a shorter version of quests.
The three realms, Albion, Herbernia, and Midgard are all great. Though cool and fun to play, Hibernia is my least favorite realm. However, this might just be me, and other may love them. This is the realm most based on magic, which sometimes becomes a burden, but at others its great. Hibernia may be the best for personal gain, but that isn't what this game is about. Some of the classes are druids, scouts, and heroes.
Next is Albion, my second favorite group. They have the most base classes, including elementalists and mages. Later on they can become paladins and armsmen. This is the realm of Arthur, and is also a lot of fun. Their classes are very well balanced, and they have some of the best quests.
My favorite realm by far is Midgard. This is the realm of trolls, dwarves, and mischiveous kokbolds. The later classes consist of Thanes, powerful warriors who also have weather-controlling spells, Hunters, people of the land capable of taming many animals, and Shadowblades, quiuet, stealthy rouges quite capable of sneaking in pvp. This realm has my favorite landscape, the coolest monsters, and, in my opinion, the coolest races and classes. Trolls look cooler and cooler as you go on, and dwarves look awesome too. But, there may be people who don't like this realm, though if they are, that's not right.
All in all, you have to get tis game- it's all pros and no cons!
Unique Multiplayer Game
I've been playing this game for over 2 years now, and am still enjoying it. It has different systems and style than the other MMORPGs out there at the moment, most notably the 3 realms competing against eachother, each character and guild having a current and custom web page automatically built on the Herald, and a development staff willing to fix its mistakes.
This MMORPG is less of a time-sink than many of the others out there, though still is a bit of one.
