Customer Reviews of Danguard Ace
Nostalgia kick I loved Force Five when it was on TV back in the early 80's. I used to rush home from school to watch it right before Star Blazers. Danguard Ace is Leiji Matsumoto's dip into the super robot genre. He also co-created Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) and created Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999. <
>Force Five was the packaging of 5 Toei animation series'. Danguard Ace (known as Wakusei Robo Danguard Ace in Japan) was shown on Mondays. It was about a teenage boy, Winstar whom with 2 others are training to become pilots for the Danguard Ace super robot. A mysterious man they call "Mr. X" escaped from an enemy base (run by the evil Krell Corps.) and has no memory of his past due to a steel slave mask that is fastened to his head. Mr. X is also an extraordinary fighter pilot and is recruited by Cmdr. Cross to train the 3 young pilots. He is renamed "Captain Mask" and takes on the responsibilty of making men out of these 3 recruits. <

>My gripe with this video is that it is only the first 2 episodes of 26 that were shown in the Force Five TV run in the early 80's. The original Japanese version had 56 episodes! Parade Video never released any more episodes and I doubt they ever will. In these 2 episodes the pilots are being trained and you never get to see the Danguard Ace robot in action. Also, they cut out the part of the narrator in the opening themes saying, "Force Five will return after these messages." As a result, the last 2 seconds of all the opening themes to each Force Five show is chopped and sloppily re-edited so there is no narrator's voice... <
>The same problem exists with the other Force Five shows; Star Vengers (Getter Robo G), Space Keteers (SF Sayuki Starzinger), Grandizer (UFO Robo Grendizer), and Gai King (Daiku Maryu Gaiking). Only the first 2 episodes of each show were released and they're long out of print. A shame that no anime distributor will pick up any of these great shows and subtitle or dub them for DVD sales.
Part One Of A Long Story
If you are looking for action like in Starvengers, Grandizer or Gaiking then stay away from this video.
The story introduces us to a mysterious person who calls himself Mr.X, a escaped slave from a alien invasion force bent on taking over earth. Soon he is renamed Captain Mask and is training 3 people to pilot the Dangard Ace Robot.
The Dangard Ace robot is only seen briefly toward the end of part one and for about 1~2 minutes in part 2. The Dangard Ace robot is still under construction and you will have to wait until part 5 or so to see the Dangard Ace Robot in action.
The story line could have been summerized like in Grandizer and the action could have jumped to the point where the Dangard Ace Robot is operational and the team in place.
But the story line drags with the training of the 3 pilots and Captain Mask and you will feel cheated if you buy this video expecting to see Dangard Ace in action yet only getting 45 minutes of watching part one of a 6 part story line in which Dangard Ace is finally introduced in part 5.
Fans of the show Starblazers will see 2 to 3 familier charaters in this video and a slight name change in one charater.
Super Robot classic
To correct the review above, Dangaurd Ace was not the first transforming robot, Combattler V was and then Getter Robo G (Starvengers) set the standard, either way. Dangaurd ace is a classic, if your a fan of the old 70/80's robots then this is it. I gave it 4 stars just because it doesnt tell enough of teh story to really get into, beleive after this you'll be looking for more. Great retro cartoon, with great retro robot art, good story to go along with it. Im sure you wont be dissappointed in this. Unless your expecting something along the lines of the anime thats out now days. Just take it for what it is and remember its time period and its a great cartoon. "Captain Mask!!!"
