Customer Reviews of Dance Mat
Okay for beginners but get one on eBay! This mat is okay for beginners. It won't last too long for advance users but this mat is a great way for a beginners to learn how to play. Some people recommend duct tapping plywood on the bottom of the mat some it responds better, but if you get a mat anywhere, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND getting one on eBay. Usually, they are brand new and factory sealed. They usually come in a sets of two (one for you and a friend) and sell for about $8.50 like this one (either in XBox or PS2) and $15.95 for shipping (The Buy It Now price on eBay is usually $8.50 but you can still bid on it to save a couple of bucks). Shipping for these mats on amazon.com are $4.49 for 3-5 day shipping and $8.98 for two day shipping so you still come out ahead on eBay. I got a mat that retails for $130 (its sort of like the mat that sells for $99 here; its more expensive because it has extra padding and it will last longer) for $20 and $25 dollar shipping. For hardcore fans who really got some moves and play the DDR games a lot, eBay has the metal dance mats with the bar (looks exactly like the one in the arcades) for about $150 (not including shipping). Otherwise, this is an awesome mat but if you want to save money and get one for when a friend comes over, get one on eBay (if you get one on eBay, search ddr or search ddr extreme).
This is not a quality product.
Buyer beware -- If you're buying this because it's the cheapest dance mat available, you're going to get exactly what you paid for. I am just getting into DDR so I bought this to practice at home. It worked great for a couple of weeks, but now the up arrow is screwy and doesn't always register, which makes it extremely frustrating to play. I estimate I got less than 20 hours of use before it started to fail on me, which is inexcusable. In short this pad is not worth the money or trouble. Look elsewhere.
~Whacks mat with a shovel~
I first started playing DDR at a friend's birthday party, where I got hooked on it and asked for it for my own birthday. Well, knowing my parents, they got me DDR just as I asked. (They love it when I excersize without them bugging me, I bet they thought DDR was a gift from heaven. xD) Along with DDRMax 2, they got me this soft dance pad, and for a while, it did great. I got better and better, and eventually, I progressed to Standard mode. That was when the madness began. At first, it was just the fact that it got scrunched up like a raisin after a fast song. And also, it slid under the couch or onto the wall mid-play, causing me to fail the song. And then, it got worse. Sometimes I would press a button, but it would not register. And the most annoying of all is when it registered when I wasn't even standing on it! It would just incessantly press the -> or <- buttons until I wiggled the buttons around enough to make it stop! The nice thing was, however, that after I got DDR Extreme, I got a new dance pad, same as the first. I had it all along, just in case a friend wanted to play. So, I hooked it up, and played on my "new" one. By then I played on Heavy mode (I rock =P), and the "new" dance mat lasted about... 5 days. And with that one, I accidentally stepped on the black hard "thing" on the front connecting to the wire. Now, the up arrow occasionally won't register any of my steps every other song. I have to wiggle around the black "thing" to get the up arrow to even work at all! Ok... the moral of my story is... if you are just beginning, this pad is for you. If you play on Standard, I wouldn't consider it. If you play on Heavy, don't sue me for damage to your floor when you take a chainsaw and slice the mat into shreds. If you play on Oni Mode (DDRMax), then don't even make direct eye contact with this product. It'll drive you to insanity. If you want a quality dance mat, buy a RedOctane 2.0 Ignition Pad. It's well worth the money.
