Great product
A lot of the complaints that I've seen with this product will likely go away for the following reasons:
1. If you could purchase the software directly from [...] by downloading it directly to your computer, you're entitled to all future version updates for free. This of course, suggests that you have decent download speed on your internet connection.
2. While it is true that currently, most movies take two blank DVDs to copy, which is the single-layer limitation of consumer DVD media maxing out at 4.7Gb per DVD, an upcoming version of this software will be able to copy most movies to one blank DVD with virtually no loss of quality. This platinum version is due late March 2003.
3. If you buy DVD blanks in bulk quantity, cost per blank can be kept under $2. A good place to shop is [...]
4. I've found this software very good at copying scratched-up DVDs and the copy played back perfectly. The original on the other hand depending how bad a shape it is in, may have problem on playback.

Final comments: DVDs today are expensive. This product lets you to protect what you own by allowing you to back up the originals. To prevent misuse of this tool such as illegal copying of DVD movies, we should reduce the incentive for such behavior by dropping the price of DVD movies so that it is equal or less than the cost of copying.

Unnecessary
There are free and almost free utilities which will do the job of DVDXCopy, do it more reliably, and spare you the aggravation of ruined DVD media. I used DVDXCopy for about a year. Now I use DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and Nero's Burning ROM to create perfect 1-disc backups of my commercial DVDs. With DVDXCopy, you have to contend with a misguided "software activation" scheme similar to that used by Microsoft Windows and Office. The first iterations of DVDXCopy's Platinum edition would prompt you to insert your blank media and then promptly ruin it by ignoring the DVD files themselves and burning only the DVDXCopy disclaimer image onto your disc. They've since corrected that, but I've moved on. With DVDXCopy you are essentially working on blind faith, and your media discs aren't the only thing which will get burned in the process -- you will as well. Other more reliable and easier methods of backing up your DVD collection have rendered DVDXCopy obsolete. Why spend the money and why bother with activation, ruined blanks, and all the other aggravation?

Use DVD Decrypter to copy the DVD files to a folder on your hard drive. Then use the "DVD Video" mode in your DVD burning program (I use Nero Burning ROM which has all the features plus more of Roxio's Easy CD without all the overhead of that application) to create your DVD. Done. If the copied files exceed the 4.7GB capacity of a single blank, use DVD Shrink instead of DVD Decrypter to do the same job of copying and compressing the DVD files onto a folder on your hard drive. Both DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are free utilities available on the Net. DVD Shrink's current beta version 3.0 works wonderfully, automatically choosing the right compression level for you. Then, once again, use your DVD burning programs "DVD Video" mode to copy those files from your hard drive into the VIDEO_TS structure created in your burning program, and you're done. Forget about DVDXCopy. All you'll get from that program is aggravation and wasted blanks.

It works...but definately NOT an exact copy.
If you really want an exact copy, try CloneDVD. DVDXcopy will by default put an extra track containing the warning about copy right. And you cannot get rid of it. It is extremely annoying after a while. CloneDVD is as easy to use and it give you the option of keeping the menu other than dropping what you don't need. The bottom line is, DVDXcopy works without giving you much choice.
