Customer Reviews of Culpeper Minute Men Flag
A Virginia Minute Man version of the "Don't Tread on Me" flag When you mention the "Don't Tread on Me" flag from the American Revolution what you probably have in mind is the Gadsen flag, which offers a coil rattlesnake above those words on a yellow banner. There are some significant differences with this flag, which was carried by the Culpeper Minute Men who hailed from Culpeper County in Virginia (Yes, the spelling of "Culpeper" is correct for that locale). In addition to the basic design of the Gadsen flag they have added Patrick Henry's words "Liberty or Death" from his March 23, 1775 speech to the Virginia House of Burgesses (the complete quotation being: "I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"). On a ribbon at the top of the flag the name of "The Culpeper Minute Men" appears as well. Also, note that the rattlesnake has thirteen rattles, symbolizing the thirteen American colonies. <

>After the Virginia convention of May 1775 the colony was divided into sixteen district, each of which was instructed to raise a battalion of men "to march at a minute's notice." One district was made up of the counties of Culpeper, Fauquier and Orange, which organized a battalion of 350 men on July 17, 1775 under a large oak tree at Catalpa Farm (then known as "Clayton's old field"). The Committee of Safety commissioned Lawrence Taliafero of Orange to be the battalion's Colonel, Edward Stevens of Culpeper as its Lieutenant Colonel, and Thomas Marshall of Fauquier as the major. Records indicate that all of the Baptists were put in one company and all the Methodists in another because the Committee of Safety recommended that the different religious denominations each organize companies of their own kind. The Culpeper Minute Men wore uniforms consisting of hunting shirts of strong, brown lines, dyed with an extract of the leaves of (probably) oak trees. The words "Liberty or Death" appeared in large white letters on the breast of each shirt. <

>The Culpeper Minute Men fought in the Battle of Great Bridge on December 9, 1775, the first Revolutionary battle that took place on Virginia soil. However, the companies were absorbed into regiments of the Continental Army and were dissolved and merged into the militia by an Act of Assembly passed in October 1776. It is known that several of the original members of the group were at the winter camp at Valley Forge. This Culpeper Minute Men Flag measures 3 x 5 feet, which is fairly standard if you are interested in flags from American history, and has two brass grommets so you can run it up your flagpole.
