Customer Reviews of Cry
A Cry of delight! What an excellent follow-up to Faith's fourth album, "Breathe"! Although "Cry" has not one hint of Country in it, it offers some wonderful Rythmn and Blues/Pop melodies. The CD opens up with the powerful tunes "Free", "Cry", and "One". All of these songs are high energy and has a good beat to them. The following songs are powerful ballads that each provide a different and unique sound to them. "Beautiful", in my opnion, is the most unique song on the album; it's an awesome song! Another stand out song is "I Think I Will". That song has a great flow and beat to it. All in all, this CD is wonderful; the songs are powerful and Faith exudes so much emotion on them. I highly recommend this CD if you love Faith or Pop music. If you are a die-hard Country fan, this CD is not for you. In conclusion, this CD is excellent and a must have in your collection. Good job Faith!
Not as bad as people make out
A lot of people seem to loathe Faith Hill for 'selling out' and going for a more pop sound than the gentler country she used to produce. People have become even more vocal about this since Cry was released. And, to be fair, maybe they have a point when you're listening to this album. Comparisons to Shania Twain are inevitable, although this never reaches the highs of her big crossover success Come On Over. However, maybe it's just that Faith's gone too far in the pop direction. Her last pop album (okay, so there were maybe a few country influences) Breathe was absolutely superb and probably the best album she'd ever done. This was mainly why I had aniticipated Cry hugely, as had no doubt many other fans. This being the case it seems such a shame that the album is so overproduced that it often obliterates any feeling.
This by no stretch of the imagination means that the album is a write-off. It may be unashamedly cheesy at points but there are still plenty of good songs here. Cry is a big ballad that sees Faith Hill take an unusual turn into the sad song - nearly every song on Breathe is happy - that is reminiscent of There You'll Be, her theme to Pearl Harbour. Free, written by country singer Beth Nielson Chapman, is also very good, even if it does sound a bit unusual when compared to Chapman's own work. Perhaps the best song here is One, which is upbeat and has a great hook to it. This kind of song is Faith Hill at her best and it's these shining moments that really make the album worth owning. Strangely enough, the lyrical content veers between completely banal such as on Baby You Belong, to probably the deepest material Faith has ever sung. Despite being glazed in a shiny pop veneer, If You're Gonna Fly Away (about addiction) and You're Still Here (about the death of a loved one) are superb. In particular, You're Still Here might actually rate as one of the artist's best song ever, even better than Breathe. This being the case it's such a shame that songs like This Is Me are included, which is chock-full of clunky lyrics such as 'I try to love Jesus and myself' which are just cringe-worthy. Even worse, this song (which is hugely reminiscent of an earlier song of her's called Me) is followed by two other terrible ones - Back To You and I Think I Will - which are so over-produced that you can barely hear Faith's vocals. The album would probably actually earn a 4 star rating from me if these 3 tracks were omitted.
Crucially, Faith needs to strike the same balance between pleasing her pop listeners and her country listeners just as she did on Breathe. She's still perfectly capable of singing fantastic songs, but it's that much harder to take someone seriously whose inlay is as sultry as Faith's is here. Finally, the enhanced section definitely pushes the rating of this CD up. Giving the listener access to Faith TV you can see how she made the album as well as tour footage. But surely the quality of the songs should speak for themselves? This is a good album, and occasionally rises to excellence, but this excellence isn't consistent enough to earn it more than 3 stars.
To Date Faith Hill's best CD....
Faith Hill Never seems to amaze me, this has to be the best CD she has made. I am a big fan of Faith Hill and have all of her CD's but this one has so much heart and soul, so much power behind it. Faith has always shown her talent in every song she sings, but this CD shows how deeply she loves what she does and how much of a risk she will take. Well Done Faith Thank you from one of your biggest Country Fans for keeping us wanting more, you truley a gift to the Country Music World.
