Critical Inquiry is not for the conceptually faint of heart. You are expected to be the sort of person who hurries to the pages of the latest contribution by Jacques Derrida as another sort hurries to the Cineplex for the latest movie by Tom Cruise. Furthermore, a reader of perhaps the premier quarterly in the United States for academic intellectuals will be not surprised these days to find either Slavoj Zizek or an assistant professor from Harvard writing about, of all things, Tom Cruise, albeit in ways that would make him unrecognizable or unintelligible at the Cineplex. In over 25 years of publication, Critical Inquiry has evolved from being a theory-driven magazine primarily for specialists in English departments to being a theory-driven forum (a section of "responses" features some often lofty, lively spats between authors and readers) for pretty much the whole campus. Subjects for recent issues include Josephine Baker, Eurocentrism, Raphael, Italian fascist films, and 17th-century science. Each of these subjects is elaborately footnoted and mightily worked up. Hence, an obscure novel by Balzac, for example, becomes by the third paragraph, an occasion to consider memory, Holocaust survivors, and the restitution of property rights, as well as the "traumatic past" of the law itself. If you wonder what happened to Balzac, Critical Inquiry is no more for you than if you have to ask who Slavoj Zizek is or are in any doubt about how you get tenure at Harvard. --Terry Caesar

Customer Reviews of Critical Inquiry
depth, bredth, and long-lasting insights this journal features articles and essays of the highest academic quality from the most prominent intellectuals in the world. its 'critical response' sections feature writers directly responding to and critically engaging another writer's material contained in the same volume; occasionally, the original author will then have his own critical response. this journal deserves not only our money, but more importantly our time. i simply cannot recommend it enough.
