Customer Reviews of Crimes of Passion
Benatar's Best-Seller This 4 million selling opus from Benatar was only her 2nd effort after 1979's wonderful In The Heat of The Night. Diverting to a more pop sound than her previous effort, Pat's unshielded voice gave her the recognition she deserved with her first Top 10 single Hit Me With Your Best Shot & other hits such as the brutally ambitious You Better Run, which fact-fans was the 2nd ever video to be aired on MTV. That illustrates the importance of Benatar in the early 80s. The wonderful thing about this album is that there are no fillers & that all tracks sound unique. Standouts are I'm Gonna Follow You which pulses between a sweet verse & cacaphonic chorus which rocks like the best of them. The video however should be avoided:-))) Pat also undertakes a very challenging task - certainly for this listener anyway. An ambitious cover version of British icon Kate Bush's classic Wuthering Heights. Pat's version is her own. A lot sweeter, with less angst than Kate's, you still hear the power & ambition in Benatar's voice. Pat has taken care of this song & only over the last couple of years has started to perform it live. This is a wonderful album - not the best of her career by any stretch, although the most successful - & certainly was made in times before Pat got a decent stylist (aka The Leotard Years). But with a voice like that, Pat's clothes are the last thing you want to look at!!
As always, Benatar's other songs are better than her "hits"
One of the things about a Pat Benatar album, you might know all about the hit singles like "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Hell Is For Children" (a very ironic ordering of tracks to be sure), but what you always get are a couple of gems that are actually better songs. On "Crimes of Passion" that would be the Geraldo/Benatar composision "Never Wanna Leave You" and the cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heighs." Benatar is one of those artists who could put together an awesome disc of "B-Side" songs that never pop up on a greatest hits CD. She might have training in singing opera, but the lady can rock and roll big time. The irony of course was that Benatar does her big song about child abuse and no one really notices because it is a rock and roll song and then Susanne Vega gets all sort of notice for doing the same thing with her "folk" song "Luka."
One Of Pat Benatar's Best
Along with IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and BEST SHOTS, CRIMES OF PASSION is one of Pat Benatar's best albums. There are a lot of great rockers here, including "Hell Is For Children", which holds a special place for me because, when I was in school, I knew a lot of kids from not-so-good homes. On the other hand, several other songs, including "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", would be the perfect soundtrack for the next time your group or school has a field day. Get this and the other aforementioned albums to start your Pat Benatar collection- preferably all at once.
