Revenge rarely gets sweeter than it does in The Count of Monte Cristo, a rousing, impeccably crafted adaptation of Alexandre Dumas père's literary classic. Filmed countless times before, the story is revitalized by director Kevin Reynolds (rallying after Waterworld) and screenwriter Jay Wolpert, who wisely avoid the action-movie anachronisms that plagued 2001's dubious Dumas-inspired The Musketeer. Leading a superior cast, Jim Caviezel (Frequency) expresses a delicate balance of obsession and nobility as Dantes, the wrongly accused Frenchman who endures 13 years of prison and torment, then uses a hidden treasure to finance elaborate vengeance on those who wronged him. Memento's Guy Pearce is equally effective as Dantes's betraying nemesis, and Richard Harris tops his Harry Potter wizardry with a humorous turn as Dantes's fellow prisoner and mentor. Filmed on stunning locations in Ireland and Malta, The Count of Monte Cristo easily matches Rob Roy for intelligent swashbuckling entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of Count of Monte Cristo (2002) (Spanish) (Sub)

No, it's not faithful to the book, but it's still an amazing movie!
The bulk of the reviews already written are correct: the book is much different than the movie. This is not a bad thing! After having read the book and seen the movie, I must admit, I love them both! The movie and the book basically tell the same story in different ways. The book is much more detailed and contains many more subplots. An attempt to follow the book in the screenplay would result in a movie much longer than anything Peter Jackson would even make. As a result, the movie takes many liberties and makes the story its own. The DVD extras talk about the adaptation to the screen, and the screenwriter admits outrightly that they were limited in what they could portray in the movie. For you purists, this movie is probably not for you. But for those who aren't bothered by book-to-screen adaptations, please see this movie! It is cleverly done! Please also read the book (unabridged version)! Both stories are riveting!

Excellent movie
This movie provides one of the best film interpretations of Dumas' book I've seen. Although much of the plot is cut out, realistically this movie is a great adaptation of an amazing book. If you choose to see this movie, be sure to read the unabridged version of the book as well. Even if you're not in it for the literature, this movie is an exciting watch regardless.

Read the Book, Seen the Movie
I will first adress the book then move on to the movie. <

>For anyone who has read this book, and i mean the 1462 page book, which is the longest book i have ever read, you would find it much different than the movie. For better or for worse? <
> <
>The MOVIE has a better STORY in my opinion. Why? Because they improved on the faults of Dumas's since he couldnt finish this book. After reading around 1100 pages and nearing the end, i started to see the book i found so great, start to fade into something just "good". Could it be to Dumas tiring of writing the book? or a demand for an ending, which thus rushed the ending into something flat and not as great as 3/4 of the book was. <
> <
>If you have the read the unabridged book as i have, you may have been disapointed to find that Characters like Franz and Albert had no real ending stories, whereas Maximilian ends the story and for god knows what reason, Dumas spent so many wasted pages about Franz. <
> <
>To spend so much time and effort, dumas fell short. If he had added another 3-4 chapters near the end, he could of made the story "Great". (whats another 3-4 chapters to you when its 117 chapters...) Instead he wasted too much time on meaningless pages half way through the book and gives hints about albert being his son but never clarifies it. The ending with Mercedez was rather weak and short (in the book) and so was it with haydee. Not impressed... since a book doesnt need so many pages to make it a great one. Too many Books i prefer over this one. <

>The MOVIE, Count of Monte Cristo, excels where the book could not. It gives a better "story" overall. It takes all the good parts of the book and compacts it into a couple well good watched hours. Though i do say "hollywood" exagerates the prison part of Dantes being whipped, where in the book he is well treated. But thats showbiz for ya. The movie has a better ending in my opinion. It is sad but uplifting, whereas in the book it is sad, sad, sad, like a shakespeare book. ;( <

>I dont think this Movie gets as much appreciation as it should. The movie is well adapted from the book, unlike so many "book to movie" films. <
> <
>To anyone who has read the entire book and seen this movie and thinks the movie was bad, but the book was good.... You should try and take sometime to appreciate how hard it is to take a book that is 1400 pages long and put it into a 2 hour movie. Love to see you try and make a better movie. <
> <
>So i will conclude that altough the book was good, the movie was better and Dumas would have been thrilled to know such a good interpertation was put out for the masses to watch, since few have the patience to read the entire book. If you have not seen this movie but have heard of the story before, i would recommend you see this as it is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. <
