Customer Reviews of Couldn't Stand the Weather
Solid follow-up "Couldn't Stand The Weather" may not live up to the heights of Stevie Ray Vaughan's superb debut album, but it is still a very solid slice of blues-rock, showcasing Vaughan's exceptional abilities as a guitar player.
"Texas Flood" had a few more real classics, including several of Vaughan's best songs ("Pride And Joy", "Texas Flood", "I'm Cryin'" "Dirty Pool"), but "Couldn't Stand The Weather" has some really fine cuts as well. The opener, the instrumental "Scuttle Buttin'", is probably Vaughan's best instrumental piece, and he and the band perform some excellent covers, particularly W.C. Clark's "Cold Shot" and Eddie Jones' "The Things That I Used To Do".
The bonus tracks include a take on Freddie King's classic "Hide Away", a piano-less "Look At Little Sister" (an alternative take to the one that turned up on Vaughan's third album a year later), and a cover of Hound Dog Taylor's funky "Give Me Back My Wig".
One might have wished for a few more original compositions (only four songs are Vaughan's own, and two of these are instrumentals). Stevie Ray Vaughan chose his covers carefully, though, and they all work well in this setting, making "Couldn't Stand The Weather" an enjoyable album, even if it isn't Vaughan's greatest.
One of their best
Couldn't Stand The Weather is Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble's follow-up to their excellent debut album Texas Flood. While a more diverse album than their debut, this album is a little inconsistent combining some of their best music ever with a few tracks being just decent.
The best tracks are absolutely killer. "Cold Shot", a mid-tempo shuffle is an excellent track with Stevie Ray singing more subdued than usual. "Tin Pan Alley" is slow blues at its best with one of Stevie Ray's best vocal performances. His guitar playing is impressive throughout with Double Trouble being the perfect backing band playing with equal amounts fire and subtlety. "Stang's Swang" is the first of Vaughan's instrumental jazz tracks and one of the best on the album. The title track is one of their best tracks featuring a great riff and an excellent solo by Stevie Ray.
The rest of the album is decent, but not among their best work. Their version of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" is good, but doesn't add much to the original. "The Things (That) I Used To Do" is a slow blues they'd perform better on other albums. "Honey Bee" is a decent track, but not among their best. The remastered version of the album contains killer versions of "Hideaway" and "Give Me Back My Wig", a dirtier version of "Look At Little Sister" sans the saxophone and keyboards and "Come On (Part III) which varies little from the version on the Soul To Soul album. A very good album, definitely recommended to all blues fans but they'd record better albums with Texas Flood and In Step.
Best guitar album to me
I`ve always loved this album. The guitar sounds so stunning that made my hair bristle from the first listening.
Everything on the right spot: the timbre, the anger and the passion.
To me, it`s Stevie BEST album. The sound is much stronger than his first album - it doesn't get any better.
He DID improve Vodoo Chile, even though the original was already a killing song. His version is longer and more polished, though the anger and sparks are still there (with new colours).
The bonus tracks are the best among the ones available on the new remastering series. Ther`re fun and HIDE AWAY and GIVE ME BACK MY WIG are "new" to people that(like me)already owned all of Stevie`s albums before buying this remastered one.
I'm listening to CSTW right now (Honey Bee). The man was THE BOSS of the guitar and, despite some previous reviews, I think he could also sing very well his blues.
HAVE FUN!
