Customer Reviews of Cotton Is King
Fun lyrics, Fun attitude Perhaps it was just a perfectly lovely time in my life, just turning 21 and going to a bar and drinking legally and all, but when I first saw this band at 'The Hole in the Wall' on Gualdalupe, I thought they were perfect! Seeing them made me think more of They Might Be Giants than Beatles; lead singers look similiar. I saw them a few years years ago in the warehouse district, they followed a poetry slam, but I guess I'm just too OLD now for that LOUD music these days. It's weird that they didn't have larger audiences when I used to see them.
Anyway, they seem, at least on this album, to try to smash in a bunch of lyrics into a rhythmically small space. But the lyrics are fun; they play around with cliches. "She's a mystic, a writer and critic, oooh she must have read a book once." Gotta love that. World's boutique is such a pretty song. I also like "No one's better than someone when that someone's wrong." It's such a healthy attitude.
And, although from listening to the intros of the different songs, it's difficult to tell which is which, there is a very nice melodic diversity on this album. The lyrics are printed in the liner notes, and it's a lot of fun to sing along to.
"Men who deserve the fate they got, always say it's sabotage, so I won't, but it was." Really, I love it.
3 1/2
I heard of this Texas group from Noel Gallagher who mentioned them in some interview. So out of curiousity i checked them out. When I finally heard them I understood why Noel liked them, Cotton Mather is even more Beatle-ish than Oasis (if you consider Oasis beatle-ish). Now for there music. The lead singer does a near perfect John Lennon impression on alot of the songs. To witness this listen to there other album Kon Tiki on the song "Home Cameo" you can barely tell the difference, and i've been listening to Lennon for years, so I kid you not. Alot of the songs are a bit on the corny side, which is why they get a 3 1/2 rating. This is guitar pop/rock with a huge influence of The Beatles. If you like the band Fastball, you will probably like this as well. Dan.
Great album by underrated band
this is the first of two great albums Cotton Mather has produced while in relative obscurity. You can hear the influences of both Squeeze and the Beatles in their incredible brit-pop melodies with great hooks. I reccomend it highly, as I do thier second album Kontiki, which gives a style a music that Lennon would have used if the Beatles had stuck around a couple years longer.
Look for their new album coming out late 1999
