Customer Reviews of Cornelius - 5.1 Plus PM (Jewelcase edition)
Beneath the Planet of Cornelius Point has been one of my favorite recordings of the last several years, and continues to stun me with its production--I frequently put on either 'Smoke' or 'Drop' and watch people's faces light up as that perfect clarity and punch kick in.
Sadly from a production standpoint the 5.1 mix isn't as adventurous as I had hoped; it's perfectly servicable, but nowhere near the state of the art mixes like those of Elliot Scheiner for Donald Fagen and Steely Dan. But still any multi-channel mix of such a fun album is bound to be a treat, and this doesn't dissapoint.
The real icing on the cake though, are the videos that accompany each song. I've grown accustomed to basic place-card art, or maybe simple animations on DVD audio discs, but this has fully explored concept videos for each song (and even two different versions for the song 'Drop'). Really a lot of fun--even my 6-year old and 2-year old twins were enthralled.
If you have a multi-channel system I highly recommend this one; and if for some reason you haven't heard the original CD it's pretty fabulous too.
Cornelius is not an ape!
Cornelius is the Brian Wilson of modern music, he's doing his own thing, to heck with what everyone else does. Cornelius' Point will be noted as a milestone album in the history of music, it drives home the point (excuse the pun) that electronic music doesn't have to be danceable, doesn't have to be predictable or simple, and frankly, doesn't have to suck. I can't stand nearly all modern electronic music for one or more of those reasons.
FIVE POINT ONE takes the Point album one step further by tightly integrating visuals to the music. The video production is not sophisticated, indeed it's charming and you could even say, it's VERY Japanese. That's not to say the visuals are not interesting. They are sublime, and several of them are right up there with the best videos by Michel Gondry or Spike Jonez. They compliment the music perfectly. The surround sound dances around you as the visuals suck you in. The Personal Surround option on this DVD is worth noting, it really DOES create a 3D listening space with headphones. But the DTS track is the way to go. BUY THIS DVD!!!!!
Tripped Out
This DVD is basically the companion video to Cornelius' album, 'Point'. The same songs in the same order in a kind of visual concept that you might depict in your mind when listening to the CD. These are not your standard music videos. They actually sync-up to the music as its played, almost Aphex Twin-esque, but less disturbing. If one is in the right state of mind, you can almost be hypnotized by your TV screen at particular moments. Watching it once is not enough and it is well worth the money if you are a fan of Cornelius' music. You will never be more enticed with a little Japanese boy washing his face in the sink, I promise you. And the remix CD that comes along with it is amazing. Check it out!
