Russian and Brazilian Cops
This documentary covers the jobs of female and male police officers in Saint Petersburg, Russia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. First World viewers get to see how the police operate in the Second World and Third World, if you don't mind me using that terminology. <
>It is obviously influenced by the American "Cops" series, however, it was vastly different. Instead of introducing each cop as they are speaking, they show them waving hello at the beginning of the coverage. Unlike "Cops" where so many actions are self-explanatory, you had to keep your eyes on the subtitles in order to know what was going on. Both countries admit that officers in their land can be corrupt. <
>This was filmed by a French television company and an English man provided the narration. The narration had a pessimistic, existentialist, film noir quality to it. "The horror! The horror!" On the one hand, this documentary shows that drugs and the mafia are a problem globally and we should empathize for police officers that must deal with those issues in poor countries. The police chase low-level criminals knowing full well that bigger fish are getting away or can pay to get away. However, I am worried that viewers in the developed world will get a self-righteous pleasure in seeing this. I hope this film doesn't result in one more powerful group looking down its nose on a powerless one.
