Customer Reviews of Cook's Illustrated
Excellent, informative, extremely useful I ordered a subscription of this for myself based on the reviews here at amazon. I was looking for a cooking magazine, but not one of those which are full of ads and useless info. This magazine is AMAZING. It's not very thick, but then again it's not full of ads and fluff articles like so many other magazines out there. The cover is almost a work of art - you won't be ashamed having this lie around your place. The writing inside is EXCELLENT - I absolutely LOVE the common-sense layman-terms they use. For instance, rather than posting a recipe with some glorious photo, they talk about WHY a dish is cooked a certain way and how they came up with the recipe in their kitchen. The recipes include diagrams - not photoshopped photos, but actual hand drawn descriptions of the dish and how it's prepared and cooked. So classy! So easy to understand and follow! The magazine is broken up into several sections: The first is a question-and-answer part where readers send in their questions and the kitchen answers them but not in some snooty fashion - the kitchen actually does the work and tests what the reader says to compare (ie: revive wilted basil in cold or warm water?). It's just great. Second section is tips provided by readers along with hand-drawn diagrams (cover cheesecake in fridge with paper towels then plastic wrap to avoid moisture on cake). Then some recipes and ideas all chock-full of what was learned in the kitchen. Product reviews, tips, recipes - it's all there. My first issue I found a great recipe for pork chops which was easy to make and is now my #1 method for preparing chops. GET THIS MAGAZINE! IT'S GREAT!!!!
Fantastic gift for any cook!
I have given this as a gift to many people and everyone loves it! A Gift that keeps on giving. What could be better?
Turning a chore into a pleasure...
I've lived most of my life convinced that good cooking requires tremendous effort and hard work. One must learn the culinary techniques, buy all the gear, find the ingredients, and finally slave away in the kitchen for hours on end. Imagine my suprise when I first stumbled on an issue of Cook's!

>The techniques were clearly explained (with illustrations!), the time-saving gear was identified and reviewed, the ingredients were restricted to commonly available items, and the recipies were intentionally kept short and simple. Cook's is a revolutionary cooking publication in a genre that seems to traffic in complexity.

>The other notable aspect of Cook's is the beauty of the writing. Who knew a cooking publication could be such a pleasure to read? From the editor's stories of boiling fresh maple syrup to the chef's adventures in fifty variations of chicken parmesean it's just high culinary adventure.

>This is the 'Atlantic Monthly' or 'New Yorker' of cooking but without the pretense. Highly recommended!
