Customer Reviews of Confidenttial
Very strong collection This excellent collection provides the best summary I've seen of the classic cartoon series. Included are some of BB's very best cartoons, plus some that are not so good but are of special interest. A broad spectrum of themes is covered in this collection, ranging from surreal to downright racy, not to mention some great musical guest stars.
Oddly enough, "Housekeeping Blues", one of the first ever cartoons to feature multiplane camera work, is not included. Nonetheless, this collection is the one to get if you don't want to spend the money on the complete series.
Now if only it would be released on DVD, with improved transfers!
Rise to Fame: this recycler cartoon is notable for its mix of live action and animation, but the originals could have been put to better use ("The Old Man of the Mountain" does actually appear later in this collection)
Dizzy Dishes: BB's first appearance, also watch for a severed nose flipping the bird!
Minnie the Moocher: one of the best!! featuring Cab Calloway
Mother Goose Land: really warped stuff, especially the "home fires burning" and the closing sequence, also watch for the outstanding aerial perspective of the blackbirds and the spider
I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You: Louis Armstrong hams it up beautifully, but he should have had better cartoon material
I Heard: featuring Don Redman, totally great music
Poor Cinderella: BB's only color cartoon, great animation, but still a stinker
Betty Boop's Big Boss: "we gotta get this guy, he's a bad actor", a non-PC twist on sexual harrassment
Red Hot Mama: one of the best!! BB really sizzles on this one, then pulls off the ultimate rebuff
Chess Nuts: more warped and racy humor, watch for the mouse bigamy scene
Bimbo's Initiation: "what a pippin!", early ground-breaking surreal animation
The Old Man of the Mountain: Cab Calloway at his all-time loopiest! wonderful, just wonderful
Betty Boop for President: not so great, but a few clever sociopolitical barbs, watch for the anti-prohibition ending
