Customer Reviews of Alfred Schnittke: Concerto Grosso No. 1 / Concerto for Oboe & Harp / Concerto for Piano & Strings
Overall Good recreding I see Schnittke fans have held off on opinionating on this cd. Well I agree with other Schnittke;-ians that this might not be the best showing for Schnittke's 3 masterpieces here. But the Markiz group does get the job done. <
> <
>Schnittke as we know is a very unique composer. "all composers are unique". <
>Well some more so than others, and some MUCH more so unique than others. Schnittke, like Pettersson stand out as the 2 greatest late 20th century composers and 2 of the greatest ever in the past 300 yrs. <
>Schnittke' smusic as we know requires sharp punctulations, tonal passages thrown in high relief against the canvas, intensity would be the word of the day. But not exaggerated. If you listen to all of Kremer's recordings you'll know what I mean. <
>As for the Concerto Grosso, my recommend goes to Kremer/Schiff/DG/recorded 1988. <
>In the Piano Concerto my recommend goes to the Khudolei/Polyansky/Chandos/recorded 1996. <
>Both are exceptional, and thus have to be first choice over this BIS. <
>The 3rd work offered here, the concerto for oboe and harp can be found nowhere else and is like all things Schnittke a masterwork of high genius. . <
>Now should you get this cd for that one work? <
>I'd recommend not. I'd wait a few more yrs to see if another recording of it is made. Its well performed, but like the other 2 works here, there is more potential to be realized. <
>Now it is true that Schnittke can be overwhelming at times for its intensity, so who knows maybe these recordings are justified in the slightly laid back approach taken here. Which is why I give 4 stars and not 3. <
>I also give the performers and the BIS label 5 Stars for making this and other Schnittke recordings. <
>Without BIS and Chandos we would not have much at all from Schnittke. <
>The big labels , EMI, DG, DECCA have miserably failed us and they show forth the attitude to modern music in general. A mind set of rejection towards 20th century music. <
