Customer Reviews of Collection
Essential Collection This is a collection of Wynonna's biggest hits since 1992 (up until 1997), she has had quite a few in that short time. Her beautiful voice which is sometimes fierce and fiery, but also shows compassion and strength and beauty, all at once. She is one true country diva that others could learn a thing or two from. She's right up there with the other divas: Trisha Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Reba McEntire, etc etc. Wy gets upbeat on songs like "Rock Bottom", "Tell Me Why", "Girls With Guitars", "No One Else On Earth", "I Saw The Light" etc. And she shows her tender side on ballads like "Heaven Help My Heart", "Only Love", "She Is His Only Need", "Is It Over Yet", "To Be Loved By You" etc. This is a must have for every country fan, come discover the beauty of Wynonna's music.
Powerful Voice
This album was released in 1997, after the very successful REVELATIONS album. Her debut, only released in 1992, but she's had so many hits in that short time frame. Her debut single "No One Else On Earth" makes a return appearance, in Club Mix form which adds nicely. "I Saw The Light", "She Is His Only Need", "My Strongest Weakness" all make an appearance from her debut album. "Tell Me Why", "Only Love". "Is It Over Yet", "Rock Bottom" and "Girls With Guitars" all make an appearance from her 1993 album TELL ME WHY. "Heaven Help My Heart" and "To Be Loved By You" come from her 1996 REVELATIONS album. It's a complete collection of all of her hits from 1992-1997, so if you're a fan you should have it already, but if your not a fan buy this and I guarantee you'll see why she is more talented than the other pop-country divas in country music.
Eclectic mix of country, pop, rock, soul and blues
This compilation of Wynonna's music from 1992 to 1997 is fascinating but the diverse mix of styles that she drew upon made it increasingly different for American radio stations to play her music, with the result that she gradually lost her pre-eminence in country music without finding an alternative niche. Discerning music fans that accept quality music and enjoy her eclectic mix of styles stayed loyal.
Wynonna began her solo career with her hugely successful album simply titled Wynonna. Although markedly different from her previous music as one half of the Judds, this easily fitted within the framework of country radio. They loved the four singles and played them often enough to ensure that they all reached number one. All four (No one else on earth. I saw the light, She is his only need and My strongest weakness) are included here, though no other tracks from that album are.
Wynonna's second solo album, Tell me why, was much more varied but two singles (Tell me why, Only love) released to country radio made number one while the other two (Rock bottom, Girls with guitars) made the top ten. You not only get those four hits here but three other tracks too, these being Father son, Let's make a baby king and Is it over yet. So only three tracks from that album didn't make it on to this collection.
Revelations yielded the country number one hit, To be loved by you, and another hit, Heaven help my heart (a cover of a Tina Arena song), but was generally much less successful than the other two. Three other tracks are included here, these being Somebody to love you, Change the world (later covered by Eric Clapton) and Freebird (originally recorded for the Skynyrd frynds tribute album to Lynyrd Skynyrd)
The album is completed by two tracks that didn't appear on any of Wynonna's own albums - Healing (a duet with Michael English that originally appeared on one of his albums) and Making my way (from the soundtrack of The associate).
This is an incredible collection that shows Wynonna's many influences. It isn't country, pop, rock, soul or blues, but a mix of all of them. This suits me fine but it's not to everybody's liking.
