Customer Reviews of Collection 3
The third of an excellent five-volume series contains many e The third of an excellent five-volume series contains many excellent songs. Most of their hits are to be found on volumes 1 and 5, although some of these songs were (and still are) popular with their fans.
In this series, there is a certain amount of duplication, so (for example) there are six tracks here that also appear on volume 4, which I've already reviewed. These are California medley part 2, O K America part 2, We just couldn't say goodbye, Sleep come on and take me, Down among the sheltering palms, Mood indigo and Forty-second street. However, if you play them back-to-back you can avoid the duplication easily as they are the first six tracks on volume 4.
This set opens with Was that the only thing to do? - the only top ten hit here. Among the non-hits, Minnie the moocher's wedding day, Hand me down my walking cane, Crazy people and their distinctive cover of Shuffle off to Buffalo are particularly noteworthy.
These excellent sisters were at the peak of their careers during the deep economic depression of the early thirties, when few people had money for luxuries. Even so, they were a major influence on many singers that followed and it is so unfair that they have faded into obscurity.
Yowzah!
All three volumes of this package are first-rate, and this is the one to own if you can only own one becuase it has two of the sister's all-time classics: the mind-boggling "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing" and "Minnie the Moocher's Wedding Day." You can say what you want, but I say Connee, Vet and Martha invented rock 'n' roll.
