Customer Reviews of Collecting with Kovels: American Art Pottery I, Rookwood, Cowan, Schreckengost, Chelsea, Dedham
Have TONS of books on collectibles but bought this too... I am so glad I bought this one! The Kovels present the highlights of major companies and makers of American Art pottery, describing the very beginnings of the art pottery movement, interspliced with ACTUAL historical footage of the studios and pottery companies at the time. While the Kovels themselves are quick to point out that this brief tape is NOT a substitute for a detailed, well-rounded book focusing on the major manufacturers and lines of American Art pottery, it is a wonderful addition to any collector's library and makes the history of this movement come to life. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Viktor Schreckengost, who is getting renewed attention these days as a major designer of the 50's. It was fascinating hearing him describe how he came up with the design for his famous "Jazz" punch bowl, which was made at the request of Eleanor Roosevelt herself. I plan to watch this video again and again. Even my husband, not a particular lover of American Art Pottery (hey, everyone has their flaws) was fascinated. One more thing - if you have ANY info on the history, rarity, etc of Don Schreckengost's (Viktor's brother) Salem Streamline "monogram" set of dishes, would sure appreciate an email.
