Customer Reviews of Close to Home Complete Series Pack
Excellent Comprehensive Documentary on Addiction!!! This is absolutely the best series to address the issue of addiction, and furthermore, to address it as a 'disease'. It has in-depth interviews with doctors, therapists and addicts, that really delve into the "why" as much as the "what". And it really does this by showing addiction as a medical disease, rather than a moral- or social-disease.
In the tapes you learn that when a person becomes addicted to a drug, their brain actually becomes 'hard-wired' differently. Links, like nerve-paths, begin to form in the brain that 'link' the act of taking the drug to the immediate gratification a person feels. These links are actually 'short-cuts' to the pleasure center of the brain, which makes it easy to see why an addicted person would rather take the pill or shot, which is immediate and guaranteed satisfaction, rather than doing something of a more lengthy nature (the program's example is of growing a garden, which is not always a guaranteed satisfaction).
This series illuminated so much for me personally. I had been in a relationship with a person addicted to heroin, and have my own battle with cigarettes. When you see what is happening in the brain, you can appreciate better why people who are addicted behave the way they do, and why it is SO difficult to overcome. People who say, "why don't you just stop?" should see this series. If it were that easy, the addicted people would stop. Nobody wants to ruin their lives. That's how powerful the drugs are, and how powerful the hold on them is (and how definitively the brain is manipulated).
The tapes also offer resolution, in that there are ways to combat addiction--through therapy, etc. It's not an easy road, but education is the first step to help. I would highly recommend this to everyone--professionals and lay-people alike. It is so well thought-out and produced. Bill Moyers is excellent, as always!
