Customer Reviews of Civilization 3 Expansion: Play the World
Could it get better? Oh it could, and it did! When I first bought Civ III, I was amazed at how in depth, challenging, and great the game was. I didn't think it could get any better! Eventually, though, I realized I had a desire to test my skills against real opponents - and I realized that without multiplayer, that couldn't be done.
So there was a void. And now it has been filled.
Not only have we been provided with awesome multiplayer options, including everyone's favorite Hotseat Mode, it tacked on a whole pile of new features as well. There are new game modes, like simultaneous and turnless games. There are new civilizations like the Koreans and (my favorite) the Carthaginians. New improvements like outposts and airfields are added to give your military that extra edge, and new units give your civilization even more possibilities. There's even a scenario editor to create scenarios of any type from almost any time.
To say the least, this expansion is well worth every penny and a must-have for the serious Civ gamer. To say the most, this is hands down one of the greatest additions to an already great series I've ever seen. Three cheers for Sid Meier and crew for Civ III: Play the World!
Civ3 Expansion is going to be great!
First of all, why give the game 1 star, even if the reviewer before you doesn't know what he/she is talking about. The expansion will probably be worthwhile, and if you think it is not worth it to pay for the game twice, give them some credit. It's a great marketing idea. And immagine how fun Civ2 was online. Civ3 will be a blast online!
I heard from numerous rumors on message boards that there will be a few extra countries to play as in the expansion, such as Spain and Portugal. But the gleaming gold from this package is the multiplayer. Connecting to Infrogames's servers, and playing Civ3 against other real life players will be the main reason to get this game. If you have ever wanted to challenge your skills against other Civ fanatics in a user friendly world, then you should definately put this game into your wish list for the holdiays.
And it's for multiplayer?
I got this so I could play the game with my son on my LAN. Even though I have many multiplayer games working fine on my LAN, this one still doesn't work. They say they support WinXP and Win98SE, but I don't think they support if one PC is WinXP and one is Win98SE, (like my setup).
Their support suggested opening ports, but that's really just for Internet games, not LAN. Failing that, they blamed it on Microsoft. Adding insult to injury, you actually have to buy a separate CD for each PC even though it is a LAN game. Most games don't require this for LAN games; sure for Internet, but not LAN.
