Customer Reviews of Civil War Episode 8:War Is All Hell
Richmond falls, Lee surrenders and Lincoln is assassinated Richmond finally falls to the Army of the Potomac and in quick order Lee surrenders at Appomattox and Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's Theater as the Civil War finally ends in Episode 8 of the celebrated PBS documentary by Ken Burns. It is still astounding to me how black and white photographs can be made into such a compelling narrative. I think the best answer is found in the eloquent narration of David McCullough, the folksy anecdotes of Shelby Foote, and the recognizable voices of some of our most distinguished actors such as Morgan Freeman and Sam Waterson which help those hundreds of photographs and illustrations come alive. "War Is All Hell 1865," more than any other episode in the series, makes it clear that the Civil War is indeed the American version of Homer's Iliad.
