Customer Reviews of Civil War Episode 6:Valley of Shadow
Lincoln finally finds his general as Grant takes command In late 1863 Ulysses S. Grant comes East to take command of all Union forces as President Lincoln finally finds his general in Episode 6 of Ken Burns' celebrated PBS documentary on the Civil War. The Army of the Potomac beings its final, relentless pursuit of the Army of Northern Virginia, starting with the Battle of the Wilderness and ending with the beginning of the siege of Petersburg. Although the main stage is occupied by Sam Grant taking on Bobby Lee, there are memorable sections in this documentary dealing with war wounds and the continuing remarkable military career of professor Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. David McCullough's solid narration and Shelby Foote's memorable anecdotes provide the defining voices of the documentary which brings the Civil War alive through the use of hundreds of photographs and illustrations, multi-layered sound effects, simple but evocative music and the recognizable voices of actors such as Sam Waterson and Jason Robards, Jr. Put this all together and that is why I watch this documentary every year.
