Customer Reviews of Circle of Friends
Touching love story- a classic This movie was so wonderful I've watched it at least a hundred times! Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donell shine together and both perform beautifully. It reminds us how valuable friendship is and how love should always be based on friendship. Circle of Friends is such a classic, which is hard to find now adays, and I recomend it to everyone who likes a movie about friends and love. If you loved this movie as much as I did I recomend reading the book. It's just as good and allows you to go deeper into the story and town of Knockglen. Other stories my Maeve Binchy are also great reads.Don't let this movie go unnoticed, and share it with your circle of friends!
Hollywood Film with Binchy's book
When I read Binchy's book of 'Circle of Friends', I felt like flipping through the pages of the book once more. Such a heart warming story about the original characters Benny, Eve, Nan, and Jack.
It came to my interest when I heard that there was a movie made, based upon the book, starring Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donnel. I thought that it would be a big Hollywood hit, maybe even better than the book. But without even finishing the movie, knowing that it was a big dissapointment, I left.
To me the book had more realistic characters, telling the story of each person. Their history and their family background, first giving an introduction of every characters life. Not to mention that the movie mainly focused on Benny and Jack. What the movie totally left out, is the Roman Catholic way of life, and the Irish culture.
Don't miss out on the friendship of these wonderful characters. Watching the movie is just a waist of time. Turn off the video and please, pick up the book.
worth watching
i read the book, but as usual, i try to refrain from comparing the movie to the book. because if you do, you're usually up for one big fat disappointment. i would highly recommend people to read the book too.
this is a pretty straightforward and simplistic film. and my only complaint is that the film doesn't flesh out some things that i really would have liked fleshed out, and it had some loose strings left hanging in the end. for example, i loved eve and aidan as a couple, yet the film gave them pretty flat portrayals. on the one hand, you're left wanting to see more, but on the other hand, there is the possibility that the film could spread itself too thin in terms of plot.
the movie was well cast. minnie driver is phenomenal. chris o'donnell doesn't get much credit. and my other favorite was the one who played eve. she really had spark! and alan cummings as the irrepressible sean walsh just makes me want to barf!
all in all, the movie's plot is a little thin, but the cast and great scenery more than make up for it.
