Houston, we have a problem.
Let me say first that the Chicken Rocket is not a true rocket. No, the rocket is more of a ballistic toy--a far more accurate name might be the "Chicken Mortar." But let's not split hairs: It's a good product at a great price. And, compared to competitors' two-stage liquid-hydrogen turkey rockets, it's a very economical way to realize the dream of sending a four-pound bird into low-earth orbit.

However, the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets may have been a little generous in their May review of the Chicken Rocket. Or the staff researchers may have had a beefed-up prototype built to withstand much stronger forces than the production model. Who knows? When I tried to replicate their historic intercontinental shot, things turned ugly. Perhaps this was because of a defective o-ring or bad metric-to-standard conversion software. Or perhaps it was because of my choice of fuel (I admit, instead of using high-grade semtex, I had to settle on a handful of M-80s). Regardless of the cause, the result was quite nasty: A rich spackling of neck, back, and giblets was blown across my neighbor's new ResistAll siding (resist that, I say!).

Fortunately, the breasts and most of the thighs, although blackened, were left intact enough for grilling. Mmmmm-mmmh!
