Customer Reviews of Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection
The best romantic comedy I've ever seen. I've never heard "Chasing Amy" described as a romantic comedy before, but that's exactly what it is. More accurately, it's a romantic comedy that's honestly hilarious, AND has a wonderful, believable romantic relationship--and how many so-called romantic comedies can you actually say that about? The script is unbelievably great, with lots of intelligent, humorous dialogue and some genuinely moving moments. Ben Affleck's speech in the car has to be seen to be believed! Anybody who thinks Affleck is just a shallow Hollywood dude will have their minds changed by his amazing performance in this film. With "Chasing Amy," Jason Lee and Joey Lauren Adams finally had roles worthy of their prodigious talents, they both really shine. Joey's character, Alyssa Jones, is a triumph for screenwriter/director Kevin Smith: a female character who's a well-rounded, real person--not just a beauty queen who's more of an idea than an actual human being (something we see often enough in mainstream films!). As is the case with a lot of independent movies, the language in "Chasing Amy" is often, uh, colorful--as it often is in real life--not sanitized in order to appeal to a focus group of grandmothers from small-town Nebraska, as most movies seem to be. If you've got a problem with that, this is not the movie for you. For the rest of us, here's a romantic comedy and plain old excellent movie that you can feel good about. In addition, the DVD verision has a great audio commentary track that any fan will love. Kevin Smith, you rock!
Mr Smith Gets A Bit Serious
CHASING AMY is, in my opinion, director Kevin Smith's best film. Sure, there's a lot of funny moments here, but everything that made MALLRATS a bit more bawdy, is toned down. AMY takes an honest look at relationships. Comic book artist Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) falls hard for fellow artist Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams). However, her sexual orientation, prevents her from recipricating those feelings. Holden's pal, Banky Edwards (Jason Lee), tries to get him to forget all about her. Thanks, to his own misgivings about himself, he just can't do it. Filled with Smith's unique style and take on life, the film gives Ben Affleck his best role, to date. Adams also shines and makes Alyssa her own, while Lee provides most of the film's comic relief, and is always reliable. Considering the first two installments of "the Jersey trilogy", the movie is more introspective, then one would expect. I am a fan of Smith and his work, it's nice to know that he has enough talent to want to try new things, once in a while.
The Criterion Collection DVD boasts another great audio commentary with a slew of folks from the film There's a "special" video intro by Smith. The 10 deleted scenes and handful of outtakes are entertaining and fun. The theatrical trailer, a guide to the Jersey trilogy and how it all comes together, balance out the main extras.
A great film that is highly recommended ***** stars for the Criterion DVD
blech!
Why did this movie get such good reviews?? Maybe it would've been clearer when it came out, but I honestly thought it was terrible.
The main plotline made no sense whatsoever. There was no chemistry between Ben and Joey's characters, and suddenly, after about 10 minutes, he found himself deeply in love with her and had to make a 5 minute confession to her. Then it turns out she, a former lesbian, was in love with him all along too, and suddenly they're kissing in the rain. There was no build-up to this, and as such I felt nothing for their relationship or anything they were going through.
The drawn-out monologues in the movie are pretty silly as well. The characters talk at each other for long periods of time while the others just stare at them blankly. (Ben Affleck has indeed mastered the blank, gaping stare.) And parts of the movie are so silly that I wasn't sure if any of the movie was supposed to be taken seriously at all. Sometimes it seems it has a message, but then it's just stupid.
It was kind of entertaining at times, and the supporting characters were amusing. So that's why it got 2 stars. But overall it was a pretty bad movie.
