Not heavyweight but decent and worth the money
This magazine fulfills its purpose well and some of the recurring departments are more than worth the price of admission (especially Words for Quiet Moments, Trivia Quiz, and Field Report -- all are fertile fields for further enquiry and the Words For Quiet Moments is as good a collection of quotes as ever I've seen.). I have three years of post-doc training along with Board Certification, and I like a "mind snack" now and then (oh, and many well-known literati and even a priest or two like to curl up with a good low-IQ thriller now and then, too). Life isn't all First Things or the Cistercian Review, and this magazine puts a human face on the Church and has its place in the food chain. Sure, you bet I'd like to see more things covered in more detail, but the Church is a vast subject, and you can be sure there are some things in my professional journals that I'd like to have covered in more detail, too. But this magazine has a decent collection of articles, it seems to have a good positive uplifting attitude, and it provides a good and reasonably edited introduction to many topics. People should be encouraging magazines with these attributes instead of making the editors feel like a bunch of second-rate citizens. It would be nice to see a "suggested reading" list of current articles in other journals, a brief summary of the Pope's pronouncements, or an Abstract collection for those who wish to look further, but those things can be editorial challenges. In my opinion, as long as you are aware of its limitations (and any magazine has them), it's a fine value. By the way if you don't want the Digest to give your name to other charitable organizations, just ask them not to do that (nearly every other magazine or journal has the same policy for giving your name out and for withholding the info -- you should see all the professional junk mail we get).
I just renewed our subscription and I'd encourage you to give it a try.

I am shocked at the nasty comments about Catholic Digest here.

This is a publication that has served Catholics in the U.S. for well over fifty years. This angry bias against them is unfonded and untrue. It is a "digest" of some of the best reading for Catholics albeit a "digest" so why would one expect something else when you subscribe?

I enjoy receiving it each month. Besides, it's the only magazine I find my teenage niece reading in my house! I think THAT speaks volumes!!!

Thank you Catholic Digest for remaining faithful in your service to Catholics who actually READ magazines for enjoyment and pleasure.
