Customer Reviews of Cast a Deadly Spell
A campy romp through the Mythos If you like the unremitting horror and cosmic indifference of H P Lovecraft, bordering on that of Nietzche then this is probably not for you. If you like the work but don't take it or yourself too seriously, you will certainly enjoy this and other takes on the subject such as Raimi's Army of Darkness and other campy titles. It certainly stands well above a large portion of the poor quality and disjointed attempts at the Lovecraft interpretation put out by low-budget film-makers in the last few years. For a purer approach, I woul d recommend The Call of Cthulhu, produced as a classic silent film by the H P Lovecraft Historal Society and other such quality features as Cool Air.
Great Dark-Comedy: Where's The DVD Release?
This film, "Cast A Deadly Spell" is a charming dark-comedy starring Fred Ward as detective Harry P.Lovecraft. It is one of the better televison programs that was made-for-cable and released way back in 1991. This amusing film centers on witchcraft and sorcery in 1948 Los Angeles. Harry P. Lovecraft (Ward) himself doesn't dabble in witchcraft; but nearly everyone in the city has some sort of charm or amulet to help make their lives easier: At a cost that is. Lovecraft as a private eye must not only defend himself from the bad denizens of the town, but more importantly, the witchcraft and sorcery thrown his way. And since he doesn't use it himself, this only makes his job more difficult.

>Because Lovecraft doesn't use sorcery, he is hired for a very strange job. When a rich man (David Warner) hires Lovecraft to hunt down an ancient book, he sets about the town trying to locate it, and finds himself way in over his head. The book he is searching for is the 'Necronomicon.' The special effects are good and funny. [Some of them very strange indeed] There is also a very young Julianne Moore, in the film, who was once the love interest of Lovecraft, and there is more to her than meets the eye. This is a very fun film, and I wish the powers that be would finally release it on DVD. My VHS tape is pretty worn by now. The film is highly recommended, as it is a fun watch. [Stars: 4.5]
Love This Movie
I love this movie. It's a quirky mix of hard-boiled detective and occult fantasy. It's funny and clever. I wore out my old VHS copy years ago and would love to have it on DVD.
