For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Astin-Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?" There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M, who one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, makes you feel it, particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy." But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, now I know what I've been faking all these years. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews of Casino Royale (2-Disc Full Screen Edition)
New horizon for Bond Well, I still prefer Sean Connery as Bond. Nevertheless, I recognized that after Connery, there is no better Bond; and speaking of production, this is the best of all 007 series... starting with opening credits and first scene. And what an amazing way of include famous line "Bond, James Bond..."!!
The great change, Connery to Moore and so forth...
It makes me sick to read the negative reviews stating Craig isn't Bond or that any true Bond fan wouldn't like this film because it's different from the rest of them. B.S. Everytime the actor changes Bond is different and not just in how the actor portrays the role. Lazanby was nothing like Connery. His Bond was very drab and laid back, lacking the intensity Connery had. Moore was more witty, sometimes to the point it could be more properly referred to as half-wit. He brought silliness to the Bond franchise that wasn't there before and hasn't been there since. Timothy Dalton was a major change of direction. His Bond was hard edged, much like craig is now, and ruthless. Consequently people that had been used to Moore's portrayal hated Dalton, many still do. Brosnan was like none of them and like all of them at the same time. He tried to hard sometimes to do it all and not be his own Bond at times. Craig is not as sophisticated as Bond of yore. But than again that's the point. this movie is about how he got to the point of sophistication he's at in the other films. To those who can't see beyond what's on screen the next Bond will help build that arch a little more. It's due November of '08.

>Every time a new actor took over this role a whole slew of people complain about the new actor not being Bond. Some people just can't get over change. I became a Bond fan when I saw GoldenEye. I had to go back and see the earlier films after seeing the Brosnan Bond. I saw Moonraker next and if any Bond film should be dissed on that one should. The sheer differences between those films didn't disuade me from viewing any other Moore Bond films nor of looking into Connery, Lazenby, and Dalton. I've enjoyed them all, some more than others (i.e. Moonraker) and I expect to continue enjoying these films no matter how much Craig is different from Brosnan.

>P.S. Anyone who writes that the movie is boring because it's not wall to wall action and explosions probably has ADD. Those scenes are not boring. At the most they are deliberately paced to establish suspense and intrigue. It's refreshing to see Bond have to figure things out instead of having things just fall into place right in front of him.
Awesome, Craig is one HOT Bond
Daniel Craig = James Bond

>This new Bond has the true sex appeal that the Bonds post-Connery lacked. I hated the Roger Moore era. Things got better with Dalton and Brosnan was suave, but never seemed to be athletic enough to pass the physical demands of a super spy. The films just seemed to start relying on gadjets first, sheer smarts and work second.

>Daniel Craig, from the first opening chase sequence to my personal favorite scene, the chair, was irreverant, super smart, ultimately sexy in the role. Too bad he fell for the Bond girl, automatic death sentence for her. Bond can't be in love or get married.

>Super, super Bond movie. I saw it twice in the theaters and half dozen times on the DVD, and I never go twice to see any movie at the theater.
