Customer Reviews of Carry on Behind
Vintage Carry On There were only a handful of truly worthy Carry On films, in my opinion, and Carry On Behind is certainly one of them. Even though by this stage the series was missing regulars such as Sid James (I never quite took to him anyway) and Charles Hawtrey, and Dave Freeman had replaced Talbot Rothwell as scriptwriter, Carry On Behind is still one of the greats.
The script has Kenneth Williams and guest star Elke Sommer as two archeologists heading up a student dig of Roman remains on a caravan site. There is plenty of toilet humour and double entendres in the usual vein, eliciting as many groans and cringes as laughs.
CARRY ON CAMPING 2
This entry proves that there was still remote energy in the series to see this through as actually a watchable and quite consistently funny film.
Old retainers of the cast include Kenneth Williams, who is, as ever, funny with his outrageous campness, Joan Sims, playing Bernard Bresslaw's nagging mother in law, Peter Butterworth who practically warms over his role in Camping (1968) as the stingey odd job man and Kenneth Connor, playing the caravan site owner, who shows little enthusiam to be quite frank, probably because he is restricted to a minor supporting role. Top billing goes to Elke Sommer, who is surprisingly good in this, looking like a natural Carry On-er with her delightfully fractured English, which accumulates in many amusing jokers whilst Windsor Davies is in a role that would have suited Sid James perfectly. Other cast members include Jack Douglas, Patsy Rolands, Carol Hawkins, Sherrie Hewson, Liz Frazer and Adrienna Posta. The cast all manage to breathe life into a series that after this completley went off track.
Not really much of a back bone of a plot (but was there ever one in a Carry on film). Basically its a series of sketches linked by holiday makers staying at a caravan park in the height of the summer season. A group of archaleogists arrive to search for an old Roman town that just happens to lie beneath the caravan site itself.
Fun, games and laughter all the way through. The new cast members adequatley satisfy although they clearly lack the sparkle of the true carry on-ers like Sid james, Barbara Windsor and Hattie Jaques. Despite being a fine comedy, Carry On Behind was a bomb at the box office in comparison to the other Carry On's. The series never recovered after the set back of losing so many of its valuable cast members. Carry On England (1976) saw the series hit rock bottom whilst another attempt to revive the series in 1978 with Carry On Emanuelle was also equally dreadful with not even having the sheer brilliance of the likes of Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims and Peter Butterworth being able to save it. The series was then briefly revived fourteen years later with Carry On Columbus (1992) by which time most of the origanal cast had sadly passed away and the film was another bomb and critically savaged.
As for Carry On Behind, its well worth a watch and by no means is this one of the best but by no means is this one of the worst. Recommended!
the last real CARRY ON
The "Carry On" series was beginning to grind to a halt when CARRY ON BEHIND was made. In an effort to grab audiences, wildly popular Elke Sommer was cast in a lead role. She is priceless as the Russian archaeologist Anna, with her fractured English and her mannerisms.
Veteran performers Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims, Patsy Rowlands and Bernard Bresslaw all appear, add their comic brilliance, while the new characters all sparkle.
BEHIND was quite risque, but not by choice. Writers of the movies were forced to up the ribald nature and humour of the films to hold viewers attentions.
Despite all this, the beginning with Williams describing the dig site while a movie showing a girl stripping is playing behind him is hilarious, and needs to be seen to be believed!
