We were eased into the career mode with a series of easy tutorials that gave us a good feel for the basic game mechanics. After that the challenges were legion, but the rewards for good city planning and wise financial management were worth the effort. It is satisfying to create a self-sufficient and profitable city that can fend off enemy attacks and produce productive, educated citizens.
Cities really come to life, thanks to the game's detailed graphics. Fountains, statues, and gardens can be used to pretty things up, and all the familiar Roman landmarks like the Colosseum and Hippodrome will eventually end up dominating the landscape. We whiled away many hours with Caesar III's City Construction Kit, which lets players build a city without the goals of career mode hanging over their heads. Any fans of the SimCity titles should enjoy Caesar III, and its unique setting and fun gameplay should attract even those who didn't like that related series of games. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Roman theme makes for some challenging historical considerations
- You have to both build a city and defend it from invaders
- Demands from the caesar can be unfair (and sometimes impossible to meet)

Customer Reviews of Caesar 3
Excellent This game rocks. My friend let me borrow it, and I made up excuses not to give it back for almost a year! I played Caesar II and, quite frankly, was very disappointed. It was impossible to win that game. Caesar III, however, is much easier. I read a review about a guy who could never win because of the ratings. I don't know what the hell he's talking about! I beat the game easily, and then went back and beat it again, taking a different path. And again. And again. That's how diverse this game can be. In the campaign, you are always given the choice between to assignments. The combinations are endless. Simply awesome.
The one thing I did not like is the fact that, once you get a thriving city going, your housing starts to require a lot of things. And unless you are very good at planning ahead, it becomes difficult to get them a steady supply of furniture, pottery, two wines, a varied diet, and olive oil at the same time. Not to mention the education requirements, need for entertainment and sanitation, water restrictions, and the need for arable farmland. That's probably the worst. Ideally, the farmland would be nearby to water, and there would be some forest or scrub near that as well. Not the usual setup, however, which makes getting pottery and furniture to the central populace, who is near the farmland on the other side of the map, a real chore.
All in all, though, this is a five-star game worth all the money you spend.
Learn how the Empire was run
As an expert on ancient Rome, I was anxious to pick up the newest version of Caesar (Caesar III) and having done so, I wasn't disappointed. This game should appeal to a wide range of people: students of history, fans of the Sim games, Age of Empires, Pharoh and civilization, anyone who enjoys a strategy building game and powerhungry company execs (or wannabes) who love control (it'll want to make you skip that boring sales meeting). One of the few entertaining games that I believe is educational as well: learn about money management, resource management and a bit of History. And for something under $20, its a steal. Buy it for the price, play it for the fun!
I want to get this game
I love this game. It is so much fun. You get to advance through the ranks and build. If you like Rollar Coaster Tycoon or Sims or Civialization you'll love this game. You have to get this game. I have to get it too. After playing it in school I've been adicted. You have to buy this game. It's great. Buy it asap.
