Customer Reviews of Cabin Fever - Special Edition
Fun but Nothing New I enjoyed Cabin Fever, but I had some problems with it as well. My biggest problem? I didn't find it scary at all. It was a horror movie with a lot more laughs than scares.
Quick plot summary: a group of kids get out of college and head to the woods to do some partying. There, they begin to catch a flesh-eating disease that makes them vomit blood and have really gross scabs. Things go from bad to worse.
Eli Roth has made a fine homage to his favorite horror movies. Like all horror movies, the kids in this film make the worst decisions ever. Should we tell the police about the guy we shot and burned last night? Uhhh... naaah. The kids KNOW that they might be infected, but two of them have sex anyway. Yes, yes, I know this is a sly wink to the fact that the kids in horror movies always have sex, no matter what kind of danger they are in, but did I really need to see it AGAIN?
Roth also makes some heavy references to Evil Dead, only instead of being possessed by demons out in the woods, the kids are possessed by a flesh-eating virus. Rampaging rednecks a la Deliverance show up to do some killing. There's an establishing shot right out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There's an ending scene much like that of Night of the Living Dead. A song from Last House on the Left pops up. All this is fun for horror fans to notice, but it was also a little distracting because I spent so much time noticing this stuff, the movie lost some of its effect.
The humor worked better for me. I laughed out loud more than once, particularly during the "harmonica" scene. I was amused by the deputy who just wanted to party. I enjoyed the Dr. Mambo line: "Yeah, he's a professor. At being a DOG!" I loved the last scene, a nice poke at the bottled water establishment.
In fact, Roth manages to create in some very memorable scenes. I'm afraid my girlfriend will never shave her legs again after seeing this movie. There's some definite cringe-worthy moments, and gore is plentiful for you merry-band of horror lovers who get into that red stuff. Lots and lots of vomiting blood.
Perhaps I am being to hard on the film because my expectations were so high. Yes, I was entertained. No, I wasn't scared. Roth didn't really show me anything new or particularly original, but I don't think he was trying to. I think he was just piecing together a fun homage to horror movies. At this, he definitely succeeds.
Brilliant
"Cabin Fever" was one of the freakiest films of 2003 and is possibly one of the freakiest films ever made. But like most of the new horror films that come out it has some campy humor in it as well. But the film is about a bunch of kids Jeff,Karen,Paul
(Rider Strong of "Boy Meets World"),Marcy, and Bert who are going to a cabin for a little vacation. After a guy with a very bad skin problem shows up and freaks them out causing them to over react a little bit.During the time from the beginning to the guy showing up there is some cheap horror gags and comedy "Don't Sit Next to Dennis",all leading to up to Karen getting sick.Really sick. The films writer Eli Roth had a brilliant idea and succesfully carried it out unlike 2002's flop "feardotcom".
The makeup effects are incredible in every way and it didn't have a bad ending. The film hooks you in right from the very beginning to the last frame of this brilliant motion picture.
Also quite hilarious is the cop Winston.I highly suggest you see this movie.B for the movie,B- for the acting.Enjoy!!!
a contemporary horror masterpiece, absolutely brilliant!!
Wow, I was really surprised to see that this movie got bad reviews from some people. In my opinion this film is nothing short of a classic! I absolutely loved it! I had always had an itch to rent this film, since I am a huge horror fan and since it had received such enthusiastic reviews from movie critics (which is rare for horror films), but being the geek that I am, I sometimes do a little background research before renting a movie. This often includes consulting with the Amazon crowd to get a general idea of what the public consensus is before heading to the video store. Consequently, I kept passing up this film due to one too many negative reviews.
Well, I finally decided to give a shot, and I have to say this is by far and away one of the best horror movies I have ever seen! Ok...if you are not a fan of the horror genre, chances are you are not going to appreciate this film. But for genuine horror fans, I think that most will agree that it doesn't get much better than this. Everything about this film works-the cinematography is extraordinary, the special effects are brilliantly gruesome, and the musical score creates a tension that is beyond anything I have ever experienced during a movie (if you watch it a second time pay careful attention to the music and you will understand why this movie causes so much tension). The acting performances are above average for a horror film, and the dialogue is unforced and natural. One of the major flaws in horror movies is that bad acting and unnatural dialogue are distracting and prevent the audience from getting involved with the film. The characters in this film are believable, which is more than you can ask for in this genre.
I get so bored with some horror movies, and my mind starts to wander away and think about work or making a pastrami sandwich. But Cabin Fever sucked me in...big time. When a movie can draw you in and make you experience what the characters are experiencing--than it is successful. Overall, I would say that this film is a contemporary horror masterpiece. But don't just take my word for it--check out what some other critics had to say about it http://www.cabinfevermovie.com/reviews.html
