While keeping abreast of cutting-edge technologies, CSI combines the ingenuity (and fallibility) of villains with the appealing humanity of its heroes. CSI director and entomologist Gil Grissom (played by series coproducer William Petersen) is introverted but ethically intense; he's both mentor and moral compass for his night-shift team, including a former stripper-turned-CSI (Marg Helgenberger); a recovering gambler (Gary Dourdan); an eager ace (George Eads) with room for improvement; a workaholic (Jorja Fox) who can't always remain emotionally detached from her cases; and a chief detective (Paul Guilfoyle) who's a necessary link to police procedure. Like The X-Files, CSI supports its characters with feature-film production values, employing a Rashomon structure that turns murder into a progressively accurate study of cause and effect. Script quality is consistently high ("Blood Drops" and "Unfriendly Skies" are exceptional), direction is slick and sophisticated, and the mysteries are complex enough to invite multiple viewings. Despite a regrettable shortage of DVD features, CSI's inaugural season remains addictively worthy of its lofty reputation. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete First Season
THE BODY OF EVIDENCE CSI is one of the best dramatic series in years! This compilation of the first season shows why. Blessed with wonderful scripts, superb acting, imaginative music and cinematography, the series deserves its years of high ratings. The main reason is the intelligence with which the writers show in their viewers; not every episode has a wrapped up ending; the villains don't always get caught and the regulars have their own personal demons to deal with. The show's foundation is William Petersen, who brings a depth of dimension to his role as the chief of the forensics team. At times harsh and apparently unfeeling, he can turn around and show much empathy and compassion and he cares about his team. Marg Helgenberger as former stripper Katherine is a single mother, recently separated from her two timing husband (Timothy Carhart); she is right on target as a woman trying to mix a career and family; George Eads is the hunky Nick, whose desire to please Grissom results in some poor decisions, but one can't deny his dedication; Gary Dourand's Warrick is a gambling addict having difficulty shaking the habit; Jorja Fox is the workaholic and lonely Sarah, who has a fierce loyalty and determination; Eric Zmandza is wonderful as the laidback but frenetic Greg, and Paul Guilfoyle is marvelous as former CSI chief, now detective. The entire supporting cast of regulars is perfect. The show hooks you right away with the lead in case, and it's not always murder! CSI is evidence that television when it sets its mind to it can bring you great viewing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
No Gratuitous Sex and Violence
I like this for the same reason I like 24. There are no useless "relationship" subplots. There is no gratuitous sex and violence. It really is all about the evidence. I am a 24 fan and have all five seasons, and I am now SO happy that I have not watched this show. Why? Because now I can start with Season One and watch through to Season whatever. I have been watching bits and pieces of this show, but my wife loves it. Perhaps if I watch these DVDs with her, I will not have to watch HGTV.
Five Stars!
I had basically given up on police detective shows until this came around. It's smart, has great acting, and can be visually breathtaking. The DVDs are great because this show, unlike a lot other suspense dramas, doesn't dumb it down for the audience, so it's great to be able to rewind a scene that you might have missed or not completely understood.
