Customer Reviews of By Hook Or By Crook
One of the Best Indie Films in Years! This film is a remarkable achievement for the writers, directors and fine cast. Besides being extremely well done, this film manages to deal with several topics with eloquence, including mental illness and transgendered lifestyles. All of the actors do an excellent job, particular Silas Howard and Harry Dodge. I would definitely recommend this film and hope to see more of this great talent in the future.
a purity in this film that i dont see in alot of others
i dont know what it is about this movie. its got this purity about it. its not all gukked up with hollywood, its beautiful.
"your beautiful. me and you were the same, were the same.."-valentine
the story of 2 guys who fall into a friendship during difficult parts of their lives. one "valentine" (harry dodge) trying to find his birth mother with nothing more to go by than a last name and a phone book and alot going on in his head. and a drifter "shy"(silas howard) who refuses any connections to others as a way of remaining detached. and valentines girlfriend "billie" (stanya kahn) whos just trying to keep things together. valentine and shy decide that they wanna be bank robbers.
this is the kind of movie that makes people love independant film. its what is so special about them. this is the reason people get the sundance channel. its the reason i love dodge.
no sense whatsoever!
i saw this film with all the desire in the world to love it, after having read the great reviews here and one in a local newspaper's entertainment section, but unfortunately i was sadly disappointed. maybe to others the movie might be interesting, but it just happened to bring together all the features of cinema that i can't stand: shaky "real-life-like" camera movement, long dull passages of monologues by an off-screen voice telling us how important the story is, an aesthetics of the cheap and tawdry that seems to be used just to make the movie "cool" instead of actually reflecting anyone's reality, a very weak screenplay in which music video-esque sequences are given far more importance than dialogue, completely uninteresting characters about whom we know basically nothing... perhaps this is what really kills the movie in the end: it revolves around presenting a set of unique characters to us, but never allows us to see what is really behind them... how can one feel the slightest sympathy for characters who simply appear to be crazy? there is no rhyme or reason in anything they do, as they just wander through life aimlessly, taking part in equally meaningless events which are all totally illogical... not a word comes out of their mouths that seems to have the slightest significance, which just slowly alienates you from the film, as you desperately hope some kind of meaning will be given to it all before the end... unfortunately, the credits start to roll and you are left with no explanation, and nothing but a desire to leave the movie theater as quickly as possible!
