Customer Reviews of Butterflies
Plenty to watch I liked this movie a lot. It has plenty of steamy scenes to keep you interested and the stars are nice to look at. It seems somewhat believable, too. Compared to much out there, it is classy and well-done. Not exactly a nail-biter or one that keeps you guessing, it is, however a nice video to get you and your beloved in the mood.
Much more Silk Stalkings than Denise Does Detroit.
If you asked most people what they'd request if they could have one wish, odds are they'd say "world peace." Since that'd be covered, then, I'd ask for something a little different. I'd request that everyone could have sex at least once in their life with someone who enjoyed it as much as the beautiful Denise (Marie Forsa) seems to in Joseph W. Sarno's classy and erotic Butterflies.
Bored with her simple existence on the farm, Denise leaves behind studly but dull boyfriend Fred (Eric Edwards) to pursue a modeling career in the big city. Once there, she meets Frank (Harry Reems), a smarmy but successful nightclub owner who takes her in. Denise naively falls for this cretin, not realizing that if Frank was a Major League baseball manager, his five-day female rotation would be the envy of the league. She faces a tough choice: either try to turn Frank into a one-woman guy or roll with the rollicking good times.
Joseph W. Sarno's films occupy that narrow window when adult movies were trying to elevate themselves above the derogatory "stag" film status. They weren't like today's mindlessly churned out flesh-fests, full of anonymous bodies grinding away in complete gynecological detail while showing as much emotional depth as the videotape on which they're recorded.
In a contemporary "adult video," for instance, after a repetitive, library music-enhanced sex scene, Denise would simply say "I'm bored," and out the door she'd go. In this film, however, it took her thirty-one minutes to leave the farm.
If the purpose of an adult video is to arouse, this far more sedate approach certainly works better. Butterflies' plot, rudimentary as it is, does its job by providing plenty of sexual encounter opportunities which, in turn, are all the steamier because you actually give the tiniest bit of a damn about the people you're watching. Unlike a typical 70's "blue movie," Butterflies is full of nicely photographed, attractive people who, unlike the performers in a typical 90's adult tape, actually seem to be enjoying themselves. While the actual sex is pretty basic, Karma Sutra "Beginners" chapter stuff, it's still surprisingly sexy, possibly because there's a little something left to the imagination. And the way the lovely Ms. Forsa carries on, you can imagine a lot!
Much more Silk Stalkings than Denise Does Detroit, Butterflies is what most of its contemporaries or descendants only falsely claim to be: an erotic movie.
