Customer Reviews of Burn to Shine
Once again a unique and wide-range recording from Honest Ben Great artwork that eminates a type of southwestern feel, Great music with lots of blues, and gospel influence. Alone: a somber opening tune that relaxes the listener, The Woman In You: Blues Tune for Ya, Less: Rockin' tune with nice guitar effects, 2 Hands of a Prayer: Pretty, Long, Uplifting, Please Bleed: This man plays a Weissenborn, remember that; Suzie Blue: Jazzy Blues a la 1920's; Steal My Kisses: This guy's from California? Burn to Shine: Southern Rock type thing, Great song; Show Me a Little Shame: Great voice, old-school talent; Forgiven: with a new-school flair, does anyone else play this Weissenborn? Beloved One & In The Lord's Arms: You don't have to be religious to recognize a beautiful piece of music. Once again a unique and wide range of talents and inspiration has come out of hard work in the fourth recording from Ben Harper and the Innocent (Magnificent) Criminals. Check these guys out live and be amazed.
I Never Heard A Ben Harper Album I Didn't Like...
And Burn To Shine is no exception. As a matter of fact, this album along with Fight For Your Mind are what I truly consider to be Harper's finest works as of today. Regarding Burn To Shine, what Harper has basically done was take the musical ideas that he loosely experimented with on his previous album (The Will To Live) and refined them into a refreshingly eclectic, yet totally cohesive, mix. There's quite a little bit of everything on BTS for those whose tastes may differ like night and day, but the inspired songwriting and guitarwork (few Weissenborn moments, however) that most fans have come to expect from Harper can definitely be found on here. It also seems that Harper's singing is more prominent and self-assured on this album as well, making it a worthwhile listening experience in that regard.
Those who are new to Ben Harper will most likely have to start out with his earlier releases before getting BTS, in particular his FIRST TWO albums for that matter. The reason is that the musical scope on BTS is so broad that it will probably take several thorough listens to grasp what Harper set out to accomplish. I feel the other albums are more accessible in comparison so it might be a good thing to warm up to this goodie first. However, if you happen to be an avid appreciator of good music, you will not be disappointed with this effort...
Gentleman looking for gentlewoman.
Why Ben Harper isn't more famous I'll never know. Maybe it's because the music industry doesn't know how to classify him. Forget the classifications. Ben Harper is one of the best musicians alive. The military drum, combined with his voice is amazing on "alone". The "woman is me" explodes at just the right time. I don't really like "less", but that's just my opinion, it doesn't mean it doesn't have any musical worth.
Some of the lyrics on "Two Hands" are just without peer. "Suzie Blue" is perfect if only for the lead in to "Steal my kisses". Some Ben Harper Loyalist don't like steal my kisses because it sounds "studioized". I admit there's a lot going on in the song musically, but that's why I like it. You can't hold his genius back. It can shine in a roots or a heavily studio produced song. The background singers, just being slightly behind the lead vocals on steal my kisses is awesome. My favorite song is "Show me a little Shame". Get this album, you won't regret it.
