Of the five Building Big programs, Domes does the most interweaving of world history, probably out of necessity. No explanation of the Pantheon, the world's first great dome, would be complete without a primer on Hadrian, the power-hungry Roman emperor who pioneered the process of stone dome-building in order to proclaim his purity in the eyes of all gods. And to understand Constantinople's magnificent Hagia Sophia, the first dome built by way of the gorgeous and inventive pendentive system, it's helpful to know that the structure first symbolized Christian sensibilities before a 1453 breach enabled a fierce sultan to transform it into a mosque. A swing over to St. Peter's Basilica necessitates a brief bio on Michelangelo, who, 30 years after working on the Sistine Chapel, snagged the commission as the building's boss. And even George Washington has a cameo to illustrate his bold decision to have the Capitol domed despite never having seen such a structure. No modern-day dome discussion would be complete without mention of Buckminster Fuller, eccentric inventor of the geodesic dome, and here he's given his due; it's his ingenuity, his faith in a form as simple as a triangle, that gave rise to ever more gigantic domes, the kind still being built today. As a further tribute, the tricky Building Small segment at the end of the episode recommends a project based on Fuller's impossible-seeming principles. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews of Building Big - Domes
Architecture and Technique with Cultural backdrop As expected, one learns much about construction, architecture and developing techniques. This alone is fascinating and educational. However, the wealth of historical perspectives, cultural background, and political motivations behind construction put this in a higher class of educational instruction. This includes information from such cultural areas as Rome, Constantinople (Istanbul) and the United States.
