Customer Reviews of Buffalo 66
If you liked Buffalo '66...don't buy this cd. As Vincent Gallo explains in the booklet that comes with his film music cd, this soundtrack cd was totally taken out of his hands by the lame little label "Will Records." He receives no royalties from the the purchase of this cd, even though the original music featured was written by him and the rights to the other music that he did not write were purchased by him with the last of his life savings.
If you want to support Gallo and a great film, don't buy this cd. If you like the music, buy Gallo's other cd, "Recordings of Music for Film," which features all of the original music he wrote for this film, in high quality, as well as a lot of other good music he's written for other films, and just mp3 the songs by other artists. I also highly recommend Gallo's album "When;" both albums are available through the amazing Warp Records.
"Primitive" (Antique) Recording Techniques
Mr. Gallo is a collector of vintage microphones and so-called "primitive" recording tools (with which he uses some personal and unusual recording techniques). Although the Gallo's tracks might sound "dirty" as if they need to be "cleaned up" to some folks these are the warm, compressed, fuzzy tones of hot antique optothermoisolator tubes that VG is going for. It's really a very lovely, ethereal, almost crackling sound that is the complete antithesis of today's all-too-common icey-clear digital work.
Semu Siciliani o no, Vincenzo ? Ué Ué!
Why did I write about this soundtrack?
Well, I should offer that I am NOT a Vincent Gallo "groupie"-first things first-- as said...! I do enjoy his work without unflagging loyalty, just a fondness of what he does that entertains me.
This is an edited version of my initial review, and would try to answer the "fan from Buffalo" who wrote that the "dirty sound" of the Gallo tracks was actually the sound Vince Gallo was looking for.
Well, I will not argue that point, but upon reading my words again, I think his performance on the guitar and piano are not polished .
This is why I think the Gallo compositions, while enjoyable , sound "rough draft" and not finished product.
If they were more polished(and I do NOT mean "slick"), this would have been a soundtrack on par with the current offerings of Angelo Badalamente,Mychael Danna, Mason Daring, Michael Nyman , and all of the new heirs to the Ennio Morricone world of great soundtrack composings....
Instead, it is just for Gallofans , which is a shame.
I really enjoyed the film and the incidental music.--
Ué Vincenzu, che PAZZONE sei!
My curiosity boiled until I decided to buy the cd --OK-- well we need to discuss a few things..........
As someone over 45 yrs, I enjoyed the "VG senior" , papa's interperetation of the standard,
"Fools Rush In"-it is a good tune, period.
I was never a fan of Stan Getz (Mrs Lester Young,hehehe)- but his vibrato-laden alto on the track "I Remember When" was also a welcome sound on this cd.
-- a little Getz goes a long way for me.
This particular track is quite nice, and sounds like some of Teo Macero or Art Pepper's things and VG had the good taste to include it.
The King Crimson tune "Moon Child" and the centerpiece Yes composition, "Heart of the Sunrise" gave me a new appreciation for the progressive rock sounds I havent heard in years!
The more "pop"- oriented Yes tune is a perfect lead in to my impressions of Vincent's "compositions" --the Yes song sounds like the thing VG is after in his "writing".
The "VG" contributions DISAPPOINTED me ALOT, they sound like "scratch tracks/demos"- they are not sounding finished at ALL.
The "VG-groupie" squad and generally most Gallo enthusiasts seem to forgive him for this, WHY??
-- I hear musicality in VG, but he should have had some PROFESSIONAL guys go in studio to execute his ideas (save for his fragile, Jon Anderson-like voice on his vocal tune. I like this voice, the "vulnerability " suites the movie).
So, what am i saying?
This could have been a "multi-stars" soundtrack, but it remains for my impression, only a work in progress.
The demo-quality tracks live an uneasy co-existence with fully realized musics of the others.
This only calls to attention the "unpolished" sound of the VG tracks. DONT ANYONE HEAR THIS??
I hear what he is "saying" musically, I just think he could have spent more time & effort to clean up the tracks in reference to the performances,it feels like he is thinking of the frases as he is recording,
-- as example Angelo Badalamente's soundtrack works on the David Lynch movies has "THAT HAUNTING SOUND" Mr Gallo,it appears, is looking for.
I'm always up for GOOD conversation, and I appreciate the other reviewer who described VG's preference for the "old tube sound". That I can abide. The actual execution of the ideas in his compositions leaves a bit to be desired, IMO.
