Customer Reviews of Britney
A sure-fire guilty pleasure I'm not a personal fan of Britney's, nor am I a die-hard fan of pop music in general. However, upon hearing Britney's self-titled release, I decided I should take a chance and pick this one up. Finding very few helpful reviews, I bought on instinct and, thankfully, was happy with my purchase. This is a great CD to pop in while working out or doing dance warm-ups.
I have one warning for prospective buyers: pop is not the genre from which to seek deviant tunes or experimental tracks. I'll admit, many of the songs on this disc sound alike, with minimal background variation. However, if it's Pop Goddess Britney you're looking for, it's Pop Goddess Britney you'll get. This album boasts seven spectacular dance hits -- "I'm A Slave 4 U," "Overprotected," "Boys," "Cinderella," "Let Me Be," "Bombastic Love" & "What It's Like To Be Me" -- that will get you up and moving in no time. Fortunately, this album only carries the burden of a few duds. "I'm Not A Girl" is a cheesy number, to say the least, with juvenile lyrics that probably won't have any impact on fans over the age of 18, and Britney's cover of "I Love Rock 'N Roll" hardly does justice to Joan Jett's original.
Britney's self-titled is a classic coming-of-age tale. Hits such as "I'm A Slave 4 U" & "Boys" proudly proclaim Britney's newfound womanhood. On the other hand, the pop diva makes it clear through tunes such as "Overprotected" & "I'm Not A Girl" that she's got a lot of growing to do. Sure, the lyrics may be saccharinated and cheesy, but they remain in synch with the album's theme. Britney's 2001 attempt is stuck at the same crossroads as the young artist herself -- it's almost there, but with a lot of room for maturation. Four stars for a nice 'guilty pleasure' mix of pop tunes to keep your feet moving.
Expert Review: 5.5 Stars out of 10, Above Average
...Like the songs themselves, "Britney" is a very telling album. While her two previous efforts were entrenched in the, two big hits and carefully designed filler format that rules teen-pop, her third album deserves a full length listen. While there is nothing on "Britney that quite...like "...Baby One More Time", "You Drive Me Crazy", "Oops I Did It Again" and "Stronger", the album on the whole is much more listenable from start to finish, and is clearly her best so far. What sets this CD apart from her two previous efforts is that Britney Spears herself is now actually taking the music seriously. This is a marred, yet interesting trip through the world of a person changing from girl to women and having her life studied carefully under the microscope along the way.Britney feels "Overprotected", she pleads "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," and tries to let us all see "What It's Like to Be Me." All three of these songs are highly definitive as well as three of the best tunes on the album. While many of her lyrics give listeners insight in a way in which her first two records strayed from and suffered as a result. "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet a Woman" is surprisingly confessional and her best ballad yet. But even that looses her some credibility when you find out that it was penned by Dido. Such a move on such a "personal" kind of song is that much more of a disappointment when you take into account that Ms. Spears actually got writing credit on five other tunes. "What It's Like to Be Me" is interesting and catchy...[but] whatever missteps there might be lyrically are made up by the consistency of the record. The Neptunes produced "I'm a Slave 4 U" may have been betrayed by a weak sounding chorus, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's got a stellar groove, and sounds miles apart from her previous Max Martin crafted fodder. "Lonely" another standout, also has a similar toughness to it. Even if its undercut somewhat by the typically insipid "That's Where You Take Me".The disco tinged "Anticipating" is another strong tune and it could very well become her next single. Of course all good things must come to an end however in the teen pop universe and "Britney" isn't without a few...missteps. "Boys" try's to rev up the same sexy groove that drives "I'm a Slave 4 U", but instead winds up sounding awkward and overly calculated. The Max Martin penned "Bombastic Love" is about as bad as its name sounds and the Joan Jett cover of "I Love Rock and Roll" is her second straight insult of a rock classic, preceded by the 'Stones "Satisfaction". Even if the album does drop the ball a bit the rest of the way, this time it's so much more forgivable. Nobody expected Britney to create her own "Jagged Little Pill" or "Blood On The Tracks" they just hoped for small steps in the right direction and with "Britney" that's exactly what they got!
