Of course, even the most dedicated user won't listen to audiobooks constantly, which is why the Soul also plays traditional CDs, MP3s, and WMAs, along with audiobooks that aren't coded in the CEA/APA format (such books don't offer the same navigation features, however). In addition, the Soul boasts seven preset equalizer settings that enhance the audio quality of its files, including normal, classical, rock, pop, jazz, ultra bass, and audiobook. And the user can keep on top of their MP3s thanks to the unit's ID3 tagging, which reads the title, artist, and album information of each MP3 file and displays it on the LCD screen.
Additional features include an electronic volume control, anti-shock protection (192 seconds for CDs, 480 seconds for MP3s), and dual play modes (A mode plays all the songs/files on a CD, whereas B mode creates a playlist of up to 200 songs/files). The Soul uses two AA batteries (included), which support up to 12 hours of MP3 audio or eight hours of CD audio.

Customer Reviews of Brilliance Audio DMP-206b Soul MP3-CD Audiobook Player
Solid Customer Support Suffice the say the unit works as advertized. <

>I did have a problem with the first audio CD I tried in it(a Stephen King CD), but all the other CD's and MP3's I tried worked wonderfully (including King's others). The problem with the King CD's, plural, was actually with three of a four CD audiobook. However, it is important to note that the problems I encountered with them I also encountered when trying them on a Sony CD player. Although both units played the audiobook CD's fine, neither CD player could forward them to the next chapter or "start again from where I left off", they all started at the beginning of the CD again. Clearly, the problem was the CD's. <

>The key thing was that before I realized it was the CD's and not the machine I called the 800 number provided with the unit, twice acutally! Both times I got service quickly, once immediately and once after a minute hold, and the lady I dealt with both times was wonderful. We were on the phone together for a lenghty period of time until I finally decided to run downstairs (two flights) and get other CD/MP3's to try. She waited patiently as I did so. Once I popped those in the unit it worked as advertized. <

>Time will tell if the machine contiues to work as advertized, I have no reason to think it won't. The instruction pamphlet for the unit, and for the accesories for the car and remote control, could certainly be better written as they are not always clear. On the other hand, I have nothing but praise for the customer service I received when I thought I had a problem. <

>Bill
does not play and no customer support
I bought a Soul DMP206b audiobook player on October 9th, 2005. It worked quite well for the first month then began to intermittently stop playing in the middle of a disk. When I would try to start it again, the display would indicate there was no disk (and of course there was.) This happened mostly when I was walking with it but then it began to happen when it was stable, on a table or bed and occurred with increasing frequency. Finally, on January 30th, I sent an email to the support address provided for the player asking about the problem and to date (March 1st) have received no reply at all. I have, for all practical purposes, not been able to use it for the last month and have resorted to an old cassette player. I am extremely disappointed. It was a $149.99 purchase, plus the additional a family member paid to get the adapter and earphones. Money poorly spent in my opinion.
Just what I was looking for
This is a great item and worth the price. It is just what I was looking for. (...)

>If you stop the audio CD and don't remove it from the player it will pick up exactly where it left off. For some reason it starts out very low in volume before returning to the volume you left it at. It is only a couple of seconds but to compensate (because I don't want to miss anything) I fast rewind a little bit. That helps anyway to remind me what was taking place when I stopped. Also, if you are not listening to an audio CD that was made using CEA/APA "Audiobook Standard" then not all the features such as 'navigation through chapters/page' will be available but as long as I can fast forward and fast rewind that works for me.

>Another good feature is being able to take the CD out of the player (for whatever reason) and when inserted again it will remember where it left off. The bookmark feature will work on any type of CD whether it is in the CEA/APA format of not.

>I highly recommend getting the optional accessories kit. It comes with a converter for playing the CD player through your car speakers if you have a tape player in the car (I know, weird but it works) as well as upgraded headphones and an AC adapter power cord. The accessories kit costs $49.99 at audiobookstand.com but they are currently having a 10% off sale (today's date is 7/31/05).

>Another neat thing is you can plug it into the AUX plug on your home stereo system and with the right cables (which you can get at Radioshack if you don't have them) you can listen to the audio player through your home stereo speakers.

>Oh, I take it to the gym and listen to it while on the treadmill. Have not had any trouble with skipping but then I only walk (fast) on the treadmill, I don't run. Don't know how it would do with running.
