Customer Reviews of Breakdown
Well worth the wait! Melissa Etheridge has finally come back to the music stage with "Breakdown," and the wait was well worth it. In this new venture, she takes a departure from her rock sound and goes a little more mainstream. Some fans don't seem to like the new sound, but Melissa's still there, and so are her always-poetic lyrics.
"Angels Would Fall," "Mama I'm Strange," and "Scarecrow" all retain the characteristic rock guitar style we've all grown to love. On the other hand, "Stronger Than Me," "Into the Dark," and "Enough of Me" are some of the new, more subdued songs, yet they are wonderfully composed and complex. They add a new dimension to Melissa and show that she is still growing as an artist.
Overall, "Breakdown" is a great, solid album. But by all means, try to get the limited edition copy, because the three bonus tracks are invaluable! Two of them, "Touch and Go" and "Cherry Avenue," are brilliant, energetic tracks, and an album without them suffers no matter how strong the rest of it may be. The absence of those extra songs consequently makes "Breakdown" lose its fifth star, but Melissa is still great no matter what!

Powerful & Mature
Maybe it's just me, but this CD is one of Melissa's best. I've read the other unfavorable reviews, yet I truly feel that this album reflects Melissa's maturity and growth. Sure, we all love her hard rock stylings, but anyone who has really listened to this CD can hear how Melissa has taken her art to the next level... Although she doesn't specifically say, if you listen with your heart, you can feel what she is feeling. Tracks like "How Would I know", "My Lover" and my favorite "Sleep" show deep insight into Melissa's heart. Other tracks like "Enough of me", "Angels would Fall" and "Breakdown" give glimpses of the rockin Melissa but with deep and honest lyrics. Melissa seems free, content, and truly in love...it shows in her work. Julie Cypher seems to have had quite an effect on this talented genius. There's alot going on inside of Melissa...I like the way she let's us in. I love the album and recommend it to anyone! Melissa...if you see this....EXCELLENT JOB...I FEEL YOU!
BREAKDOWN...TRULY
After a hiatus of 4 years from "Your Little Secret" to "Breakdown", Melissa expirienced many different stages of life, motherhood, divorce, love, and fame(criticism over her lifestyle), some of this would be consider perfect stage for some killer self-written tracks, but Breakdown, found Melissa more tame and less clever than her previous albums, the record it's not that bad, but lacks of innovation or something else, to propell the album to a higher level, the album is just flat, outstanding in the album release cuts Enough Of Me, Angels Would Fall, and the unrelease track Into The Dark. But the rest of the album is soon fogetable, and not as deep as Yes I Am, and not as rocker as Your Little Secret, and not even raw as her debut, no wonder this was the beggining of the end for Etheridge, whose power cleverness returned in her next album "In This Skin" but by that time radio has given up on her tunes, so sad. But it's all because of this, not a bad album, just the average.
