Director Billy Ray (whose previous feature was also a true story: Shattered Glass, about the young writer who fabricated stories for The New Republic) and co-screenwriters Adam Mazer and William Rotko do an extraordinary job of maintaining the tension as the story leads to the conclusion that's been revealed in the first few frames (i.e., Hanssen's arrest in February 2001); the exquisite torture of O'Neill's having to keep Hanssen distracted while Bureau technicians search the latter's car is but one example. Moreover, notwithstanding the plot developments, the filmmakers manage to keep their focus on the personal interactions that are the film's key element: the relationships that O'Neill maintains with Hanssen, his father (a cameo by Bruce Davison), his wife (Caroline Dhavernas), and others are entirely credible. At once fascinating and horrifying, Breach is inarguably one of the best films of 2007. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews of Breach (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD]
Explosive! 'Breach' brings to the big screen the story of FBI turn coat Robert Hanssen. For most of his 25 year FBI career, Hanssen was selling U.S. secrets to the Russians. Money surprisingly was not his motive nor was a beef against the U.S. (as in most such cases) he did it simply for the challenge & thrill of the spy game. Although he also made plenty of ca$h. <
>Chris Cooper does an excellent job of brining the dour and creepy main character to life. His role is well-acted and totally convincing based on the books I read on this case. Ryan Phillipe who plays the much younger agent who helped bring him down also gives a strong performance. And Laura Linney who plays a loveless agent who "doesn't even have a cat" is believable in her role too. The story-line gives alot of background detail into Hanssen's personal life including his obsession with Catholocism, perverted home porn and computer geek mentality. All this contributes to a well-paced story that methodically unfolds until the climactic final scene. This movie proves that truth is often stranger and for that matter more entertaining than fiction. <

3 Stars for Just Okay
This movie missed its chance. Why it chronicled the time period after the main character's guilt was a foregone conclusion is a mystery to me. This would've been vastly more interesting if we could've seen what lead up to the main character's treasonous activities. Chris Cooper is top notch in his role as a conflicted, middle aged, self-absorbed, traitor. Just the elements a good actor needs to wail. His supporting cast either never quite get their groove on, or their characters are essentially one-dimensional. When I look back on this film my thoughts will invariably gravitate to what might have been.
More than Meets the Eye
The first time I saw this movie, I shrugged and said, "It was okay...but I wouldn't pay to see it again."

>This is a deceptively simple-seeming film. Yeah, it's about spying, but it's not a thriller, and certainly not an "action" film. Or is it? There's plenty of action going on in the characters' minds; you just have to be willing to look deeper than the surface to see it. And therein lies the thrill, of discovering who these people are and why they do what they do.

>All the performances are subtle and understated, which is exactly the right style for a film like this. All are good, but Chris Cooper is especially right on the money as Robert Hanssen--spy, turncoat, and all-around weird guy. The more I watched the film, the more I found to respect in his performance. That goes for the whole film, actually. It's a thinking person's movie--and it will get you thinking. Very well worth the price of the DVD, because you'll be watching it more than once.
