Customer Reviews of Brand New Day
Still at it Sting is probably incapable of submitting a poorly-produced album. Brand New Day doesn't equal his best material, but it's still selling like mittens in Alaska and it's been pretty well awarded.
I mean, I'm watching PBS as I write this and--coincidentally--on comes an ad for Sahara, a new documentary, and they're using "Desert Rose" as the backing music. The bloke is bloomin' ubiquitous.
Having said all that, Brand New Day is a good, enjoyable album. You've probably heard "Brand New Day" the song on the radio. Chances are you also heard it shortly after midnight on January 1st, 2000. Sting may be the only musician who wrote a song for the day *after* New Year's 1999, proving, he's a marketing genius as well as a fine songsmith. That song also fits in nicely with the rest of Sting's immediately catchy hits. The album's opening track, "A Thousand Years" is sorta the melancholy flip-side of the same coin.
"Desert Rose" is as lovely as the song's title suggests it could be; as some have mentioned, Sting wanders vaguely into trip-hop territory here, but it's really just a logical progression from much of the world elements he's inflected his work with before.
"Fill Her Up" could have been a James Taylor song; although I don't think it's one of Sting's best, I have to disagree with the reviewer who complained about Sting being self-indulgent because he writes about poor folks when he's filthy rich himself. Sting wasn't always filthy rich; he was once a lowly English teacher. And he's admitted in interviews that he's still not comfortable with his wealth: he once even said he felt like a fake. Give the guy a break. Besides, what about artistic license? I mean, who's gonna criticize Charles Dickens for writing about poor people? The song itself, though, is pretty pedestrian--until the gospel choir kicks in, then the chorus starts sending chills down your spine.
In all: if you're a Sting fan, you probably won't be dissatisfied with this catchy, solidly-produced album. There's a reason he's among the most admired of modern rock musicians. Some great guests. I even enjoyed the sexy French rap. Just doesn't compare with "Blue Turtles" or "Nothing Like the Sun."
Elegant Music....
Well...I don't know why everyone is complaining about this. I'm tired of reading the review that says; Sting's previous work was much better....
I think that what makes Sting a great artist is that he never fails to bring in the new stuff, time is passing by and the man can't keep making albums like ''The Dream Of The Blue Turtles'' which already sounds a bit outdated today.
The biggest hit was probably ''Desert Rose'' along with ''Brand New Day''. Of course, I see that many reviewers were disappointed to realize that the track ''Desert Rose'' is here in it's original version, the song (when remixed by producer Victor Calderone) became a huge dance floor hit and spent 9 amazing weeks at the top of the sales charts. So for that version, I recommend the CD Single, which has Calderone's ''Melodic Club Mix'', the version that was used in the awesome video.
More or less, Sting's brooding and serious work has been put aside for a change, it's not a personal album from the man. It takes a turn for the upbeat side, managing to bring in Jazz, Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap.
My favorite tracks are: Desert Rose, Brand New Day, After The Rain Has Fallen, Ghost Story.
Overall, it's a great album (Dare I say one of his most popular)---- It may not break grounds like his previous, but you cannot say that this is bland, Cos that's definitely something it's not. Enjoy!
Some Great Songs but poor audio mixing
Sting has some good songs on this album. My complaint has to do with how the audio was mixed. When singing solo, Sting's vocal volume is bright and nicely mixed with the background, however when the background vocals or instruments kick in the overall volume drops as well as does the presence of his voice. It is very annoying to hear this as songs transition from verse to chorus. Also the 5.1 mix does not utilize the center channel appropriately. I would call this a 4.1 mix with a very diminished center channel. I have not seen this complaint in other reviews but I know that my $1,200 Denon DVD player, Sony ES Amp and Polk speakers cannot be the source of this problem.
