Customer Reviews of Boyz N the Hood (2-Disc Anniversary Edition)
Boyz N the Hood: A Reassessment BNTH was one of my favorite movies when it was first hit theaters in the early nineties; but now it is 2005, and my opinions have changed dramatically. <

>First of all, there is the language. While it is true that using profanity in a screenplay makes language seem more authentic, saturating it with profanity does not, and in fact makes the screenwriter appear as if he is simply trying too hard. <

>Singleton also resorts to constantly playing the all-to-familiar black victimologist race card, culminating with Furious Styles' famous line "Why do they want us to kill ourselves?" <

>A thorough examination of the psychology behind such a statement is another subject altogether, but at its most basic level, it reveals a worldview that is destroying Black America. Blaming the white man for the scourge of drugs, alcoholism, and violence in black communities only seeks to absolve the black man of his responsibility in these matters. Yes, African-Americans have been historically mistreated in America, but the attitude of victimology is the absolute worst way to handle the situation. It virtually guarantees that the situation will get worse.

Haunting Inner City Movie
It's been some time since I saw "Boyz 'N the Hood" but much of it has stayed with me. I was impressed by so many of the elelments that went into making this such an excellent movie; the acting, the directing, the writing, the editing, virtually everything. I'm just a fellow who grew up in Iowa and lives in North Dakota so I'm hardly one qualified to praise this film for its' realistic portrayal of inner city life. I don't know if this movie is "realistic" or not in that regard. However, I know that the writer and director had a message to convey and they conveyed it well.

>"Boyz 'N the Hood" is about many things. It is about the challenge of raising a child in a one-parent home. It is about the senselessness of random, pointless violence. It is about the limited means of escaping the ghetto as a child growing up in it (and it does an excellent job of contrasting the dependability of education over sports). It is about the importance of having pride and respect for your self. There are so many messages on so many levels that it is hard to absorb them all in a single viewing. That is what is so impressive about this movie.

>Although the movie shows us dead ends, violence, emptiness, failure, sorrow and despair, it leaves us with hope and an appreciation that that the straight and narrow road is still the best route to success no matter what the point of embarkation.
