Customer Reviews of Bortnyansky: Glory Be To God
What Went Wrong? The Russian chamber choir, "Lege Artis," has performed beautifully on other CDs.
I don't know what went wrong with this one. But, something did. The different vocal parts have too much vibrato in them at times, and even worse, the vibratos that the parts sing don't even fit with the vibratos that the other parts are singing. Often this group on this CD sounds like it is underwater ... each part wafting out on its own, in its own direction, unrelated to any of the other parts in any intelligent way.
Also, the totally even and mechanically timed rhythms that are invariably used are not in accord with the Italian influence on Russian liturgical choral music, which this CD should exemplify (this disc's only composer, Bortnyansky, studied in Italy). This kind of Russian liturgical music requires metrical interpretation, to fit the TEXT. This disc fails to deliver that, and more egregiously, the plodding, regular rhythms make the tonally cacophonous vibratos sound like Chinese water torture!
It seems to me that there were also problems with the recording itself. Sonically, the final product is far too muted in tone, and the general sound quality lacks clarity.
Don't waste your money.
