Borodin's Second String Quartet is far more popular than his First, and deservedly so. The First has its attractive moments but it rambles on far out of proportion to its content. The Second is more concise and it's consistently lovely. For those who want both Borodin Quartets, there are only a few available choices and this is one of the best. Of course the Borodin String Quartet (EMI) would seem to deserve automatic primacy, but their recording wasn't made during their best period; the Lark Quartet is technically stronger and musically very convincing. Still, unless you're a Borodin freak, you might want one of the many versions which couples Borodin with other music, like the Emerson's (Deutsche Grammophon). --Leslie Gerber

PASSION AND PROMISE FULFILLED I'm often astounded by the unexpected, especially in well-worn music I am overly familiar with, when suddenly, as if out of the blue, I am knocked sideways by the epiphany a performance can bring. <

Just as quickly, Borodin's instrumental writing becomes infinitely transparent, his fabulous unison harmonics thrill, and melody pours forth unfettered. It is a frisson that fills the heart with existential joy while, simultaneously, causes tears to flow. <
