On their third full-length, Blow in the Wind, Me First continue with a lineup that's like the top pick of the underground scene: vocalist "Spike" (Swinging Utters), bassist Fat Mike (NOFX), guitarist "Jackson" (a.k.a. Chris Shifflet of the Foo Fighters), along with drummer Dave Raun and guitarist Joey Cape (both of Lagwagon). The goofy, talented musicians travel back four decades this time, picking up 13 classic songs of the '60s and racing through them at lightening speed (the whole disc clocks in at a little over 27 minutes). From the raucous "Who Put the Bomp" and "Sloop John B." to the heartsick "I Only Want to Be With You," Me First put the pop back in pop punk as they bounce their way through the years. The two standouts on the disc, though, are "My Boyfriend's Back" (on which the tough rockers show their sensitive side) and "Stand by Your Man" (whose words Me First twist around to implore listeners to "stand by your band"). With their high-spirited attitude toward music and their healthy dose of humor, Me First prove once again that there still is a party raging in the world of rock & roll. --Jennifer Maerz

Customer Reviews of Blow in the Wind
good for fans of any type of music While tons of punk bands like to do covers of older, cheesier material, it usually just sounds like a really bad rendition of the original, leading one to ask why they bothered in the first place.
This is not true of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. They take great songs, some of which weren't in your standard 4/4 beat, and do excellent punk versions of them. The guys are all excellent musicians, and Spike's voice has come a long way from their first album, to the point that I'd say he's one of the top two or three punk singers out there today.
Additionally, the albums continually refer back to earlier, classic punk songs. For example, their cover of "San Francisco" opens with the riff from Bad Religion's "Stranger than Fiction", and ends with a verbal jab at BR's lyric opacity (BR's singer is Greg Graffin), with one Gimme yelling "Where are we going, Greg?" and the other responding "To the library!" For this reason, fans of 80's SoCal punk will probably "get" this album more than casual punk fans. The opening of "Blowin' in the Wind" recalls NOFX's _Punk in Drublic_ album, but it would take too long to explain to someone unfamiliar with NOFX here.
However, that shouldn't stop anyone from getting this album. The songs are covered with equal parts reverence and irreverence, but the Gimmes always do the songs justice. Spike's vocals are incredible, and perhaps their albums will give casual punk fans cause to go out and buy some of the stuff that the Gimmes are referencing musically, such as Bad Religion or NOFX. I think these guys are incredible, and can hardly wait to see what they do next.
the gimmes are back!
..OK, I was a guy that always said that punk covers [stinks],but I've never known a real cover punk band, like those guys, Foo fIGHTERS,NOFX,lagwagon, nufan and swingin utters memmbers covering old 60's showtunes is a great idea, their versions are pretty respectful and very punkies.....is great,if you wanna buy this cd,don't forget blow in the wind, who put the bomp, and will you still love me tomorrow,...those songs rule!
awesome.
When I was younger, I used to listen to a lot of Beach Boys, Venturers, etc. Then I got into NoFx (Fat Mike plays bass for MFATGGS) & Bad Religion and listened to nothing else. I recently picked up this album, and I have to say the classics have never sounded better (except for maybe Catch 22's version of Sloop John B), especially on Runaway. MFATGGS keep the spirit of the originals, but add an incredible amount of skater punk energy.
I highly reccomend this, whether you grew up with the original versions of these songs or if you're a skater kid looking for some high energy tunes.
